Hmm, Octane use w/ the Max...

Uhm, soooo -- what octane do you use? Whenever I fill up, as in...when I'm literrally on "E"...I use premium (93).

Does a Maxima NEED premium at ANY time? Is it just wasting $$? From what I know, premium burns cleaner and doesn't have any...or LESS additives compared to a lower octane. More power.......I doubt it...

Is 87 octane ALWAYS good? Whats yalls $.02?

for the maxima- 93 all the time every time.

when i drove my old 4cly with 87 i could hear the valves ping. so i used 89 most of the time. i could feel the difference between gases.

I believe if you are straight NA, no need for it. The maxima has a fuel map for that octane and I believe is fine.

Now if you are boosted like me, running 87 is bad idea. Unless of course you got the J&S and want to run cheap gas.

unfortunatley maxima's need high octane to perform the way they do, you can try using 89 it will give u more gas milage but your car will drive like crap

Knock sensor equipped vehicles are programmed to provide maximum timing advance (and therefore power) based on a high octane fuel, typically 93 octane. Maximum power occurs at the onset of knock, so timing is set based on engine testing to just below the knock threshold. If the car owner chooses to use lower octane fuel, detonation (knock) will occur which the knock sensor detects, and the ecu will retard timing until knock is not being detected. So yes, power is lost when you fill up with lower octane fuel.

assuming there is a 10c difference between regular and premium, which is usually not 10, but 8, but ill put it 10 for illustration purposes, and assuming you fill up with exactly 18 gallons then, you are spending a whopping

$1.80 per tank

more

than you would have if you use regular.

so if you use 7 tanks per month, which is probably too generous, at the end you will *WASTE* that much money:

$12.60

which is about the cost of a meal for two people at your local junk food joint.

search works just fine for me. try narrowing your search to a specific forum (4th gen) or to only in the past 6 months. there are 113 threads with the word "octane" in the title.
