peeling steering wheel leather

the leather on my '95 steering wheel is all worn down, or more accurately the rubberish coating that is on it. so the bare leather down below is all fading to different colors and looks crappy where you keep your hands. i was thinking of hitting it was some matching shoe polish to make it less of an eyesore. as long as the color is more consistent i think it would be almost un-noticeable.

anyone else have any better ideas? is there any such thing a a quality wheel wrap that doesn't look cheezy as all get out? i can't imagine there is. and i would assume replacing it is out due to airbag issues?

I got leather steering wheel covers too from pepboys for $17.00.
I blistered my hands trying to thread it.
I took about a good hour to thread the entire steering wheel, and it was my second time too.

Wheelskins look pretty good if you get the right size and take the time to sew it on well. As far as changing the steering wheel. If someone has access to a steering wheel puller it's pretty easy. The airbag module is of course the concern, but also fairly easy to take out when pulling the steering wheel. The removal and install is in the fsm. It would be up to you and how you feel about working with that safety item.

In the future you can use a leather conditioner to prevent the leather from drying our(drying causes leather to loose color and eventually crack). The shoe polish is a great idea even for your leather seats as long as you apply the shoe polish nicely and then go over the polish with a leather conditioner (very important! so shoe polish wont get in your clothes).
I use shoe polish and the leather care(conditioner) from apple polishes. Great stuff!
you can go to their website http://www.applepolishes.com for more info.
