Stalling ONLY in park and neutral

Thanks to all who responded to my first thread on this subject. I'm still troubleshooting with some more oddities happening.

1) Car stalls only in park or neutral AFTER in drive.
2) On a cold start the car idles indefinitely in park at about 900 RPM with no variation in rpm's and no stalling.
3) Once I drive any distance - even around the block - and put it in park (auto trans), within a minute - often seconds - the rpm's get eratic and fall off and the car stalls.
3) I can have the car in drive with my foot on the brake indefinitely with the RPM's rock steady at about 600. There is never a problem when driving (stop signs, red lights, etc.) as long as the car is in drive. Once the car goes from drive to neutral when stopped, the car stalls.

I'm thinking either an Idle Air Control Valve or the PCM itself. This seems less and less like an MAF, but I'm a novice troubleshooter.

By cranking up the throttle lines do you mean adjusting the idle on the throttle - which is supposed to be a factory pre-set?

yes. if your car is stalling at lower rpms, increasing your idle rpm by a couple hundred will probably stop it from stalling. if i remember correctly, my car idles right around 1200 on a cold start. does anyone know what the factory set idle rpm is???

on another note, your car could be stalling for a number of things... i'm not the best trouble shooter but i'm sure some of the other members may be able to give u some ideas.

there is an idle circuit that will raise and lower the engine rpm based on temp and wether the car is in gear or not. By adjusting the throttle stop to increase the idle you will not be helping yourself. I would take the car to autozone and have them pull the codes. The car should run at about 1200 to 1400 rpm when cold and drop with temp increase.

might want to check TPS, throttle position sensor... adjusting the throttle cable to increase idle is probably not a good idea... you'll always have high throttle... like on cars with carbs. And if you have an 02+ you can't adjust the throttle cable because there isn't one (drive by wire, electronic)

Thanks to everyone trying to help. Would the Throttle Position Sensor automatically trigger a Service Engine light? - I don't have an SES yet. Right now I guess I'm resigned to wait for a couple of treatments of fuel injector cleaner and try to get the time to clean out the throttle body. We were using 87 octane for quite a while so I'm wondering if this is a symptom of a gunked up fuel system.

clean the throttle body with throttle body cleaner, clean the maf sensor use 91 octane gas, dump fuel injector cleaner... the good stuff... such as Redline, BG etc...

I think the car will stall if the maf is messed up... I've put my hand in the path of air flow in front of the maf and the car stalled... I've pulled off the intake tube while the car's running and the car stalled.. so it could be gunked up maf?

I say try cleaning these things and see if it helps.
