2001 Max vs. 2001 Jetta (Wolfsburg edit.)
Hi, I`ve post this topic yesterday, but I did at the wrong place here..so I`m posting again...My friend has this 2001 Jetta 1.8 T, 5 spd, he install a blow off valve, and a cold air intake. He wants to race my 2k1 Maxima, air intake, 5spd. Should I?please let me know...I dont want to loose and then they start making fun of my max...Every one wants to do that to our max family...!!!!
First of all, I don't think you should be afraid to race anyone on the track. Don't look at it as " I'm here to win". Think of it more as " I'm here to learn my car". When I hit the tracks, i'm not worried if I get beat my anything. I'm there to have fun and learn my car. So don't feel pressured into racing for fame and what not. Race to learn.

Well I have a 96, with intake ,y-pipe, UDP, and MEVI, however before the MEVI I must have raced like three 1.8T jettas and they weren't all that good. I beat all three of them. From what I understand a blow of valve doesn't do anything for HP gains and an intake will only do so much whether your turbo'd or not. However the 2001 is a heavier maxima so it could be a closer race. Don't under estimate it but I'm pretty sure you'll win.
I've run a few chipped 1.8Ts at my track and I'm usually .3-.5 and 3-4mph faster than them on average. It's my understanding that a CAI and BOV are meaningless to the 1.8T and that it may cause driveability problems. Is your friend possibly talking about a bypass valve (ie forge) because that's what most guys run, not BOVs. Not until he gets chipped would I worry about much. The 1.8T does have a ton of potential though.

BOV is a safety device for the turbo. When you let off the gas to make a shift, the turbos keep spinning and making all kinda of nice boost that cant go anywhere cause your throttle body is basically closed. So all that built up boost can "backfire" through the turbo and cause damage to the turbine. Thats where the BOV comes in. It allows that pressure to escape via an opening rather than going back through the turbo. So its just a safety thing (and it sounds cool, lets you know the turbo is there doin its job). No hp gains are seen from a BOV.
Otherwise, with just an intake, the 1.8t wont be making much power, and when put in the jetta, there isnt a real good power to weight ratio. As long as he hasnt put some real $ and time into that engine, you shouldnt have a problem taking him out, maybe only slightly, but if your max is well driven, the jetta should get owned. Beware of modded 1.8t's tho, they can get mean
