2k/2k1 Tranny going into 4th gen

anyone personally is using a 2k/2k1 manual trans in their 4th gen? I remember awhile back hearing that they are exactly the same except the 2k/2k1 has beefed 1st and 3rd gear. im in the market for another tranny so im thinkin about gettin a 2k/2k1 tranny.

Dixit put a 4th gen tranny in his 2k1 and had to mess with the shift linkage IIRC.

Is there a limited slip option for any 2k/2k1 tranny's? The AE? And if it helps, Tilley has a 2k2 engine and 6spd tranny swapped into his 4th gen. That's a bit off the path, but concievably the shift linkage and tranny size might be about the same length (not that you could run the 6spd tranny specifically).

Luckee2bhere has a 2k/2k1 tranny in his 98. I believe only 3rd is supposed to be stronger though. PM Jay25 he installed it and would know all the details.

If you put the 5th gen tranny in the 4th gen, everything will be fine except one thing. The shifter will be cocked further backwards than normal. Almost one whole gear. So If the shifter is in your normal N position, technically you are in the 1 3 5 gears. Thats how much it offsets the shifter. On mine since I did a 4th gen in a 5th gen car, it was opposite, it pushed the shifter assembly forward one set of gears. But I fixed that by heating up the shift rod and bending it back into shape. Basically did an S bend on the shift rod, what wonders an acetlyne/oxygen tank can do.

The reason for this is the actual shift linkage coming out the tranny is about 1/4" different in length, which ends up being a whole gear once it goes through 3ft of shift rods.

Now if you use 5th gen tranny, you will need for sure 5th gen half shafts. Drivers side to be exact. I replaced both mine because I broke the passenger side removing it.

Can't you just cut and weld the shift linkage to the right length?

Turbo. Can you finish up your thread about the Cobra rotor/300z calipers? I'd hate to have people blaming this kit for the unrelated problems you have/had. thanks

I have a 2001 tranny and just need to reinstall it once I get a clutch kit. The vehicle speed sensor had to be removed from my 1995 tranny and installed in the 2001 (it was capped). As was mentioned, the linkage is further forward (shift **** further back) but if you have a short shifter, the change may be considered a positive one (ie. easier to reach 1-3-5). Lastly, the axles are identical. No need to get new ones (unless you have a VLSD model--2k1 AE tranny). I bought a 2001 drivers side and it is identical to my 1995 one.

Actually if Turbomax95 does this he would need to ADD about a 1/4" to the shift rod. Me I can actually cut it because its actually longer than its supposed to me. I was going to do this, but decided against it cause just thought it was easier to heat and bent the shifter itself.

Doesn't 01 tranny = anniversary = VLSD? I'd think you'd need to swap the drivers side shaft.

P.S. my AE swap was over a year ago

01 open diff - no axles needed
01 AE VLSD - driver's axle needed

Personally, I love the slightly rearward position of the shifter.

hey guys i have a 01 tranny in my 98 maxima and i didnt have to change any axles at all. it shifts so much better then my old tranny, its like its more precise while going through the gears. i like the fact that it sits alittle further back due to my custummaxima short shifter had the shifter way to forward. it shifts so much better then before guys you have no idea...

i paid 700 for the 01 tranny which had 4,500 miles on it ( i forgot the excat number) and i got a new clutch (150) and had my flywheel cut(forgot how much that was). it drives so good. this should be a mod that every1 should do if they have a 5speed.

i have a 2k tranny in my car. It fits perfectly but feels a little lower. I have a STS so maybe its not as bad as it should be but it looks fine and feels good. Shifting feels a little different from my old tranny but that sh*t probably was f'ed up so who knows.

BTW, Irvine78 is using the stock 5th gen 5speed, but with both axles from an auto 4th gen. It's like playing with LEGO's!

I would have to agree with the others also. With the 2k1 tranny, shifting into gears is a pure joy. With a short shifter, the rearward position is perfect. It is possible that my 95 tranny felt this good when it was new and that I just forgot, but the 2k1 tranny definitely shifts into gears with great feel.

i couldnt agree more. I received the warnings about the fitment issues with shifter but its nowhere as bad as it sounds, or maybe cause i have STS...but even without it i cant picture it being too bad. I'll take a pic of how mine sits with pascetter STS halfway down.
