98 Max - Intermittent No Start / No Crank

Maxima Lovers,

I have a 1998 Maxima GXE and have a starting problem. A few weeks ago I noticed that when I tried starting my car, there was a 2-3 second delay before my engine would start cranking. It would only happen sometimes, but then it started getting progressively worse. Now, the car doesn't start at all sometimes. It usually does this after not using the car for like 6 hours or so or in the morning, but sometimes after long periods such as these, it works fine. I took my car to a mechanic, and he said I need a new starter. He replaced my old corroded stock starter with a rebuilt Autoshpere starter. It worked that day and the next, but the day after it wouldn't start again. I took it back to him the day after that, and he thought it might be a defective starter, so he replaced it again with another rebuilt Autoshpere starter. Again, it worked fine that day and the next morning. After I got out of work (the car hadn't be turned on for 8 hours) it wouldnt start until the 5th time of trying to start it (no crank).

I've looked through these forums and found some information, but its not too helpful. Does anyone have any ideas on what I should do? I checked one of the Technical Service Bulletins and it said 1) check the starter 2) check the battery/alternator 3) check the inhibitor switch. I have a brand new Die Hard Battery in there. I have no clue where, what, or how to replace the inhibitor switch.

Any and all thoughts are welcome. Please help. Thanks

Does the Check engine light come on when you crank? Does it crank at normal speeds? Does it seem to crank ok, but not to start running? What do you do each time it doesn't start, or takes awhile to start? Check starter, battery, igniton switch-make sure CEL illuminates. Try starting in N or P . Consider a bad Park Neutral position sensor or clutch safety switch if 5speed. Check all fuses and relays under the dash and hood-especially if labeled starter/igniton, etc. Try starting with foot to the floor-acclerator next time it won't start. Consider engine wire harness problems. And last of all consider cam or crank position sensor problems. If it is odd and intermittent-sounds electrical wires/relays or sensors. Good luck.
