widest I've actually been able to cram in the rear wheel well is a 17x8. you'll need 32-35mm offset on them. maybe a hair outside that range, but with the 32mm offset I had to roll my rear fenders a bit.
the 35 is very close to the strut housing, so you can't go much past that either.

really limits you on 8" wide wheels that will fit, but most of the better wheels will have them in those sizes. the typical ricer wheels don't get wide enough or have too much offset. (you can run a 17x7 w/ 45mm offset no problem). when you get to stuff like Volk, Work, 5Zigen, MAS, some Konigs and many of the good Enkei wheels you'll find stuff that fits.
expect to pay $200 a wheel absolute minimum for stuff like that.

Is it pretty much the same for the front? Also what would be a good tire size so it will not rub? like 235 45's?

that's what I've been using for a while, with good results. can't go much wider..

Jeff (and may others) is/are using Mustang wheels with some different offsets.. .but I think they hit the fenders if you bottom out in the back.

the fronts, you can go a bit wider, but I don't know why you'd want to run staggers.. the rears are the narrow point on the 3rd gens. 4 and 5 gens are opposite.

Does anyone know the offset of the mustang wheels on a 95 GT? I ask because I know a guy that will sell them to me (tire and all) for $100. And I really dont wanna pass up the deal if the will fit fine. I believe the wheels are 17x8.

not to steal your thread ferran586 but since were on the subject, will 235/45/17 fit on a 17x7 rim or will the tire be too wide?

it depends on the tire, but mostlikely.

should be okay, but call your tire dealer and ask them.

it will fit. but i would only feel safe when cornering under "spirited driving" with 225's at that rim width. a 235 with the 45 sidewall is borderline too thin to solidly mount into the depths of the 7" wide rim lips.

also, 225's just, just fit flush and nice, whilst a 235 may have you sticking out of the guards.

i've never run 235's, mind you, but i can see the potential flaws in choosing those. and based on what tires and rims i have run, i would not choose 235's at all.

They will, but might rub, try to find 235/ 45,

maybe even 245/ 50 would be better??
