Automatic Transmission starts in 2nd gear

anyone have this problem?
I have to downshift manually to get it in 1st or stomp on the gas. This might be caused by coasting and not coming to a complete stop at stop signs, but it's really annoying. The car slowly speeds up, so it might be a 'feature' Nissan has for a smooth accelleration. You want the car to get moving and you have to push on the gas to get it to shift into 1st or down**** manually.

I am pretty sure that is typical for autos. This is to ensure a smooth start from a stop.

Here's a thought: When you come to a stop sign STOP. Maybe it's not the transmission that is the issue as much as it is that you are coasting through when you should be stopping.

yeah i hate it, whenever i want it in first i gotta romp on it, it also shifts out of first too fast when i do stop completely at a stop sign, so i gotta do the same thing and romp on it so it stays in first, freakin annoying

I had a "comfort/performance" switch in my 3rd gen that really helped- in performance mode it shifted MUCH nicer and higher in the powerband without excessive throttle.... any modification like this in a 4th gen? I would love to have the option again.

(sorry if this has already been beat to death)

3rd gen had hte same tranny. I have also read some NON North America Maximas/Cerfio's with that option. I guess we need that Tranny Computer.

I think this is the computer we need-

Jim Wolf Transmission Control Unit

I'm not sure how much it is though.

If the 3rd gen had the same tranny, do you think the transmission computer would be an easy swap? Would there be ECU conflicts? If it would be smooth I might go to the local wrecking yard to find a computer and switch assembly.

What you need is a 5spd manual tranny.
he he.
I never have trouble with it going in any gear that I don't want it to.

This is the biggest annoyance of the automagic tranny on these cars... and when you do stomp on it to make it downshift, its so abrupt that it feels like something is going to break in the tranny...

I would have to agree with you on that one.
However, I think you will find this is pretty common on auto cars that are built for a smooth ride like ours.

it snaps ur neck back cuz of the power, we have torque, if u did the same thing in a civic auto, it wouldnt be so bad since their torque doesnt really come in in the low end.

I agree the lag is there to provide a smooth ride, but the "wind-up" feeling you get, where the RPMs want to go up but the car is almost "suspended" in that in-between gears is crazy.. and then all of a sudden the tranny down-shifts and bang...

Anyone have any experience with a slushbox on another FWD with comparable HP/torque? like an accord V6 or TL?

My sis has a Mazda6S and the tranny is 100x better in everyway except 1 - It shifts slow.

In the 6, it downshift at a certain speed everytime and has good responce when you hit hte gas. There is no lag but it shift slowly. This car also has the 5speed auto which makes it seem fast because of the shorter gears.

If someone swaps the 6th gen 5speed auto our cars would be alot quicker too.

Also I have noticed, I have no to little lag when hte AC is off, but when the AC is on - damn it is too slow.

I am having this same downshifting problem. I don't think this is normal for an auto. Like mine, when I am taking a left across a 2 lane highway I will slow down almost to a complete stop and the tranny won't downshift to 1st and I will be going across the lanes in 2nd gear. I know it should be in 1st gear and not in 2nd because this isn't safe.
When I go across the road I have to really get on it or I will get hit. Mine used to not do this but has got worse over time. I think this a problem and not just normal smooth acceleration becuase the car doesn't get anywhere and it can accelerate smooth in 1st gear.

i'm having the same damn problem with mine. it is the most annoying thing i have ever seen in any car that i have owned. i'll be slowing down to almost a stop and have to pull out somewhere like on a busy highway and it has such a lag i have to nail it do avoid being hit, or i just leave it in second until i'm up to cruising speed. it reallllllllly sux. wish i coulda found a 5 speed max to buy where i live.

Same problem here, seems like it's common & normal; but mine tends to not even downshift from 3rd to 2nd, when slowing down to go around a curve... I've become an expert at giving it just enough extra gas when manually dropping it down into 2nd, so it shifts smoothly and doesn't feel like it's harming the tranny...

Get a 5-spd... on a serious note - I don't think so - at least not a "change this part or this fluid" type of fix... its just the fundamental shift logic that is a little flaky.
