P0420: Catalytic Converter Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 1

Hi All,

I went ahead and retrieved the P0420 code from my 2000 Maxima SE (50k miles). Now I know it can either be the bad O2 sensors or the cat in fact went bad. But how do you narrow down the problem? I also think that exhaust smells somewhat like rotten eggs, but I am not sure.
Any advice on what I should do? Will Nissan cover it?

Also, I remember someone posting a link to a large text file with full and detailed OBD2 code descriptions, anyone know it?

Thanks in advance.

Read the FOLLOWING TSB . Take it in to the dealer. If you have a California spec car they'll
probably just reprogram the ECU. If not, the catalytic converter may actually be bad, but in any case, both are covered under the 8/80 Federal emissions warranty.

The code P0430 popped up in my 2k. Both the dealer and nissan usa said they could do nothing unless I replaced my muffler with an original.

Well I wouldn't change the 02s, I'd go in for the TSB reflash.

However, the rotten-egg smell usually means a bad cat, however that should be covered under the emissions warranty BUT check your Owners' Manual to know for sure.

No, but it's the SAME problem just other bank setting it off.

There might be another TSB for that code, but *HOPEFULLY* your dealer is smart enough to read. Probably not though.

Found out my car is Cali spec, so it seems that the ECM needs to be reprogrammed. Will visit the dealer soon.

Thanks all.

Good, should be covered until 80K as DanL previously mentioned.

Ok I just threw the same code. I cleared it while at Autozone. I'd like to take it in to the dealer to have the ECU flashed, but I have an aftermarket y-pipe. You think the dealer will touch my car with the aftermarket y-pipe?

Also I have an Injen intake. No other modifications to the exhaust. Currently 92,000 miles, and have a 100,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty.

Thoughts on this? Take it in or no?

The SES code happened this morning. I think I may just wait and see if I throw it again.

I think I am going to wait it out till I get closer to 100,000 miles and see if it pops up again. I just don't want to have to exchange y-pipes...PITA.

I've had this code before and they flashed the ECU, but that was at 18,000 miles or so.

well i have a 2k and i had the rotten egg smell, car was shaking, i had ses, slip , and tcs lights on , so i replaced the spark plugs and ignitions coils , all the sysmptoms went away, now the ses light came on and gave me P0430. Auto zone cleared the ses light , but at times i have small faint rotten egg smell, very faint. any suggestions?

Damnit...I just threw a p0430 code now. Before it was the 420 code and now the 430. I'm at 97,000 miles with only 3,000 miles to go on my warranty. Looks like I'll place a call into a local dealer to ask about if the TSB would be covered under warranty. If so, I'll have to switch out my intake and y-pipe...PITA.

Bad smell?? Cat problem

P0420? It's under warranty as an emissions problem till 80,000 miles.. mine failed at 90 =\

The reg dealership cost is 100 bucks to have it scoped, but since it's a TSB, it *should* be free. Don't let them gank you. If they try, ask about the TSB.. =)
