Hit and run! What can I do?!?

Some as*hole rear ended me on the Western Ave. on-ramp to the 10E Freeway. I got out of my car and he tells me to get off at the next exit and tries to jam off on me. I catch up to him and he tells me he has no insurance and he speeds off again and this time he managed to get away because he went into the opposing traffic lane to lose me. I got his license plate number so I was wondering if there was any way I could get his phone number so I can get the money to fix my car. If he doesn't comply, I guess I'll report him, but I rather just get the money. What are my options and what is the time limit to report this? What idiots! I always get hit by morons without insurance!

Not surprised...not surprised at all. It really ****es me off that I have to fork over extra cash to my insurance company because there are a lot of idiots here without insurance. This is just insane. To top it all off, it's these morons with their two decade year old cars that drive like they own the road. AH!

Report it to the police immediatly. Every hour you wait decreases your credibility and the chance of catching the goof that hit you.

Report it to police. Get a police report and take it to your insurance company when you get your car fixed. Some insurance companies will wave your deductible if you have a police report and you are not at fault

You need to tell the police IMMEDIATELY. You should have done this directly after it happened. Get off of the computer and call. You can't sit on this one. Let your insurance company go after the guy. The police will gladly give your insurance company any info they need so that they can go after him.

If you give the tag number the cops then they definetly can find them, their name will pop up in their computer database and will give their address, this similar situation happened to me before.

Yeah, 1st thing to do is file a police report. Then contact your insurance company immediately after. They need the police report #.

The thing is that there's no major damage. It's just some black marks that came off his pre-1990 rubber bumper, scratches, and dent on the underside. Most of it can probably be buffed out. I'm just ****ed the idiot tried to run from me twice and is driving without insurance. Won't reporting the accident affect my insurance rates or at least affect me negatively? I was just thinking I somehow try to get his contact info, if possible, and try to get money to repaint the bumper or if he doesn't pay, annoy the hell out of him by taking him to small claims.

I don't think insurance goes up when it's a hit and run.

Insurance goes up for any reason, no matter what the reason is. If they see any black mark they will jack up your rates, even if its not your fault. As far as small claims court goes, this is how I look at it. Sometimes you just need to let things go, reason being is your going to lose more money that day your in court then you'd gain by not going and working instead. Personally I dont have time to fry the small fish... if its something not major, just get it taken care of and drop the subject. Obivously the decsion is up to you but thats just my .02 on the matter.

Question is, if I make a police report, will it be reported to my insurance? I want this guy to burn. For god's sake, he went into opposing traffic lanes to get away from me! Also, I don't really have to worry about losing money from going to court and missing work because I just graduated from undergrad and won't be doing anything for a couple of months.

Im not sure if it will, however you were not the one to do anything wrong. If you pull $ from your insurance, you know how they work. I dont work for an insurance company so I cant say for sure, I can only guess what the outcome might be.
I can understand why your ****ed off, I go though the whole road rage crap every time im in LA, be it in Burbank, Glendale, N.Hollywood, hell even up in the Granada hills area. Too many idiotic drivers down there. As far as losing money goes, it looks like you have some time on your hands so go after him. Even if you choose not to, he'll get his in due time but this is your call to make. Id just weight out the Pro/Cons, its simplifys things. If you have the motivation and the time to pursue the guy, then my all means go 4 it.

I'm trying to weigh out all the pros and cons and see what my options are. I was initially going to try to get his phone number through DMV or something, but I don't think they can release his number. Now I'm wondering if I report it to the police, will my insurance company find out about it? Don't want my rates to go up, but I also don't want this idiot to think that he was slick and got away with everything.

They wont release the #, you can try & explain the situation you never know til you try. What have you got to lose, worst comes to worst they say no. Give it a shot anyway.
I can understand about your rates, hell every1 can. Just remember you didnt do anything wrong. The idiot can be slick all he wants, chances are sooner or later he's gonna get whats coming to him with that kind of driving.
Let us know what happens man, good luck.

Calm down, champ. I'm the one that got rear ended. He had a shi*ty a*s pre-1990 Honda Accord and I'm sure he doesn't have insurance because he can't afford it. The last thing on his mind is trying to repaint a bumper on his old *** car. The bumper was also rubber so I don't think there's anything to paint on it. Also, he can't go back in time and get insurance dated before the accident so I'm not really worried. I'll drop by the PD on Monday and they'll take the report. I'll be satisfied if they cite him and impound his car.

I was merely trying to drive home the point that you're really blowing it with the way you're handling this. You should have reported it immediately. For future reference, whenever you are rear-ended, it is almost ALWAYS the other persons fault.

And as far as the person who said you'd get your deductible back if you are found not at fault, that only applies if the losing insurance company agrees to give it to you, which is customary. Since the other guy has no insurance company, don't count on getting your deductible back.

I was in a hit and run about 4 months ago with a car hauler that never stopped on the highway and when I talked to my insurance about it they said that I would have to pay the deductable but that it would not raise my rates because it was a hit and run. I'm not even sure that the guy who hit me new what happend. New hood, fender, headlight, and tire was almost $5k.

You have to report it before him because he can say that you hit him in a parking lot then chased him down the road and then it's your word against his.

First one to the cops wins.

I have state Farm and my insurance has never gone up for a claim that wasn't my fault...

1. - bent both front rims and passenger lower control arm on my Spec V in Baltimore City on 2 seperate potholes (or craters) about 30 feet from each other. Repairs were like 2000K dollars, rates did NOT go up.

2 . - Somebody hit my car with something in a parking lot and left a HUGE dent on the corner of my roof. 400 dollars to fix, rates did not go up...

I guess it really depends on your insurance company..
