Hello I own a 93 automatic Maxima SE SOHC.Recently I was traveling out of town in cruise control set at 80 I usually have one hand on the wheel and rest the other on my shifter. While I was resting my hand on the shifter I accidently knocked it into neutral and let it red line for atleast 20-30 seconds(had the radio up to loud didnt hear it rev nor did I look down to check my speed cause I was in cruise control). After that happened my wouldnt shift normally without me letting off the gas completely otherwise it would just rev and go no faster on the speedometer. After driving it like that for 2-3weeks back and fourth to work approx 15miles a day, I came to stop sign then my car started shaking I noticed reverse wouldnt work and it seems like im stuck in highgear. Only thing im wondering is did I completely **** my transmission or could it be something else cheaper to fix? I love my maxima but im not gonna pay more money to fix it then its worth.

"high gear" sounds like its probably in "safe mode"...no real worry, just turn it off and let it sit, than turn it back on

the only thing screwy is you lost reverse...thats weird

just one little thing for you to know, your cars a dohc, not single. as for the tranny prob i have no idea, ive done a similar thing in accidentaly throwing my jeep into reverse while i was goin down the road at 30, luckily it has some safety mechanism that automatically shuts the car off for you.

hey

Yeah I have a manual on 3rd generation Maximas I tried following some kind of steps to check the codes or some**** but I wasnt successful in following the steps because it told me to put it in drive while the car is off which is impossible because the shifter will not move without the car on, unless you have the brake pushed in when the car is on then turn it off and move the shifter but it did not tell me to do it that way anyways point being could you point me to where I could find how to take it out of safe mode.

another thing..

After reverse stopped working my car sounds way different its coming directly under the engine right by the transmission. And when I put it in 1st 2nd or 3rd theres no distinctive differences its all the same. Which is why I thought the transmission was messed up.

Same thing happened to my auto max. But I think the problem arised because my cooler got clogged and i drive like a idiot. Anyways, my car wouldn't go in reverse or move back when in neutral. It barely even goes forward. This happend after it gave one final bad shift that almost put my tranny on the ground. I'm pretty sure mine is f**ked. Sounds like yours is goin too. I'm in the process of swapin' a 5spd in right now

I ran a few miles down the highway in the top of second in my old auto, nothing bad happened, hmmmmm.

Sadly it does sound like the trannys on its way out. Maybe its in safemode? I've heard Aaron92se talk about that before. hmmm?

Okay, so whilst everyone helps you out with your tranny problems, here's a upside the head for driving with only one hand on the wheel at 80! That's just plain dangerous, fella. If you were to hit a hole, something on the road or burst a tire, the wheel could easily get ripped outta your hand & you'd lose control. At best you'd just damage your car, at worst you'd kill someone (which would probably land you jail time - negligent homicide).
Keep both hands at the 9-3 position (esp with airbag equipped cars) as often as possible.
Don't be lazy - drive safely.
