A/C switch went out, A/C problems again, any advice

Ok, here's the scoop my A/C relay (#25230-79981 12RGG ) in the engine bay went out about a month or so ago. So I have been doing it ghetto with my ghetto relay (thick wiring, which requires manuel connection) anyhow, so I was doing that for a while, I havent found anyone with a relay to replace or to borrow to see if my relay is the MAIN problem. Well everything seemed fine, until my manuel A/C switch went out. Now it only blows on 4,when I first got the car 1 didnt work, but I didnt think much of it. So I take it to my trusty mechanic, he checks the car (rushing of course, because he's going out his way to look at my car, while he should be working on a customers porsche) I tell him what the deal is, and he tells me its my resistor.

Resistor?

He gets under the dash, unscrews two screws, and pulls out this little credit card looking thing. He then tells me its fried and that I should get another one, thats most likely my problem(very sure tone of voice), so I'm ok, fine I'll go get it. I go to a used auto parts store, and they tell me its gonna be $50, is this a fair price? and might this be reason why my manuel switch doesnt work? The reason I'm stumped is because even thou I"m not running the car with that little resistor, I still can get COLD air on 4, with my ghetto rigged relay attached. Any ideas what you guys think it might be? I was trying to look for my haynes manuel to help me, but I cant find it. So can you guys help?? THanks

Yes, that's a common problem with the AC control. If it only works on the highest and lowest settings then the resistor needs to be replaced.

Courtesy of Post#32 in the FAQs:
There is a resistor assembly mounted on the air duct close to the blower motor. That part has failed. It is used to control fan speeds 1, 2, and 3. Speed 4 is the maximum blower motor speed, so no resistors are involved. Replacing the resistor assembly is something the home mechanic can do. The only tool needed is a Phillips screwdriver. The replacement part costs about US$25.

The blower motor is located just above the passenger's feet. Look at the wires leading away from the blower motor. Just inches away from the blower motor there is an electrical connector located on the air duct. That's the resistor assembly. It is easy to remove and replace.

Replacement is the usual remedy. However, if a spot of localized damage is seen it may be repaired with a soldering gun.

There is a good photo of the blower motor and resistor assembly in the Haynes repair manual, page 3-8. If you don't already have a copy of this book, please get one. It will be money well spent.

a) Move the front pass seat all the way back (for convenience)
b) Remove a harness connector (with 4 wires I think) running into the bottom of the blower motor.
c) Remove the 2 philips screws that hold the blower motor resistor in place.
d) Put new one in, reverse install.

Blower Motor Resistor Part Number: 27150-1E405

You can get it here:

http://www.nissanparts.cc/cart/?pn=27150-1E405

Should be $28 at your local dealer. It's $28 delivered from discount Nissan parts sites.

Edit: If you are handy with a soldering iron, you can try to fix it yourself. See this thread.

Dam gay Junkyard guy, he was giving me some speech about handling the resistor will mess it up, something about static build up, he is charging me $50 for a used one, lol, rather buy one off the nissan dealership, hey what about my relays, my a/c blows cold air when I connect one end of the wire into the one hole, and the other end into another, when the wire isnt placed in the A/C compressor or whatever it is, just blows air. I switched my fog relay with my a/c both dont work (would explain why my fogs went out a long time back), so now I need two new relays, where can I find those and how much am I looking at paying? Could this solve my problem, what about if I buy them and it doesnt work? Can I return it?
