about maybe a month and a half ago i painted my tail lights. i reded out the amber with testors red spray, and then coated everything with some testors tint spray. everything was fine up until about a week ago. the tint is starting to peel away. i think the red is still fine but the tint will be gone in about another week. how should i fix this when i go to paint them again? the reason i never used a clear coat the first time was that someone said it would come out cloudy. also, when i originally painted them, i used 2 thick coats of spray tint, would it be better to use thin coats?


happyricefob, i know you tinted your lights with the same spray, how are yours holding up?

 

Well, you didn't use any clear coat on them so what did you expect? Just get some testors glossy clear. Now, however, you'll probably have to redo everything all over.

 

The tint looks horrible. my suggestion is to not do it again. stick with red/clear taillights on a black maxima.

When using an aeresol to paint anything, it it best to use many thin coats, gradually building to the desired thickness/color. Depending on tempeture and humidity, wait 10-24 hours between coats. You may want to bake the pieces in a 150 degree oven for an hour or so when you are done to really cure the paint. Make sure you open all the windows.

10-24hrs? They are usually dry to the touch in 10-20 minutes and cure in about 5 days. I would also suggest you wet sand them. Thing with NITESHADES is that the coat is usually darker after it dries than when it's wet. You might end up making it darker than you want. I also suggest you don't do it inside the house.

 

Whoops, I meant open all the windows if you bake the pieces in an oven, I would not suggest painting in a house. Testors paint is usually dry to the touch in 20 minutes, however, the paint will continue to "gas out" for about a day or so. After the final coat is applied, wait 5 to 7 days like Big D said, the paint should be "fingernail" hard (when you depress the edge of your fingernail into the paint, it shouldn't leave a mark). Wet sand if needed with 400 to 800 grit sandpaper, then use a paint-tollerant rubbing compound for the final polish. Be careful with sanding Testors paint, as it contains a flex additive that can cause the paint to peel off instead of polish and smooth.

 

The wet sanding is just for the TINTing process if you use niteshads. I wouldn't use the TESTORS tint spray if my life depended on it. It's such crap, not black but purple. After a day or 2 it's blue/green. The niteshades doesn't have a glossy finish so I would wet sand it.

 

i just sprayed my tint spray right on the lense after i cleaned them with some dish soap, mines still 100% on there, no scratches no pealing, look just like the day i put it on
