I heard that it's pretty easy to clean up the carbon deposit inside egr valve. Had anyone here done it with a carb/throttle body cleaner? I just wanted to know if it's doable or not. There were 2 types of EGR valves for passenger cars, pintle vs. recess operation. Pintle is easy to clean, while recess can't be cleaned. Which one is for our car (SOHC)? Please tell me it's doable cuz I dont' feel like forking out $100 for a newer valve.

 

Craig's site has a how-to on cleaning the EGR valve for the VE engine, I imagine it would be similar for the VG. I cleaned my EGR valve with some throttle body cleaner and it seemed to work.

I used to use carb cleaner, but I recently took a better look at the design and it looks like it may never need cleaning!

I think its the pintle design that you mentioned. It looks like a piston that plugs a cylinder (sort of like an engine piston and cylinder). So there is no 'seat' to clean, and the motion of the piston in the cylinder should be self cleaning (sort of anyway). So long as its able to move freely, it should be fine. Definitly a smart design by nissan.

 

I noticed a huge difference in emissions after I cleaned mine last year (after failing emissions). The NOx levels were cut WAY down so I think it does help to clean it.
