Quick cigarrette lighter wiring question

This should be an easy question to answer:

I took apart the dash to hard-wire my sirius PNP tuner. I assume the orange with blue stripe is hot and the black ground coming off the lighter?

I have a voltmeter on order, but this would leave one less thing to screw up if someone has access to a wiring diagram.

TIA,

Jeff

I'm an idiot...I should have thought about using a test light to test if it's hot. I'll have my dad with me, he graduated from stevens with an EE degree in 1974. Maybe he can finally put it to use.

I guess I should have payed more attention in Emag, but I have circuits next semester to redeem myself.

Thanks for the quick reply.

yes, the orange is +12 switched power (turns off when car is off) and black is ground

generally for car (nissan at least) wiring, 99% of the time you find a black wire, it'll be ground

Generally, I've found black is ground in any application, and red is hot. Going by this, I assumed the orange was ground. Thanks for confirming this. Can't wait for my damn voltmeter to get here and to finish the faceplate for this install. My lighter power splitter and all the wires running to it (from the sirius tuner and radar detector) is fugly.

-Jeff

PS. Thanks for your site, it helped me change my broken window regulator a year or so ago. Saved me $100 vs. going to the auto body shop.

I assume you meant to say orange is power.

Black is ground for most auto applications, but it's usually line voltage in AC systems (ie household wiring) so be careful if you ever mess with that

Thanks for the tip, my other experience with wiring is in modding computer fans, which would explain the simmilarities...good thing I haven't done any wiring in my apartment yet. Oh, and a belated congrats on getting out.
