Need info on Engine parts

I can't find any information on this anywhere.I just replaced the timing belt on a 1990 Maxima GXE and now I have a ratteling noise behind the drive shaft pulley, and there is some fiber that looks likle fine ground wool on the back side of the pulley. The engine runs fine, but I can't figure out what the noise is unless it's the main bearing, and it doesn't sound like that. The fiber looking stuff really buggs me. Could it be the timing belt coming apart (doesn't seem likely) or is there some gasket that may be flying apart. If you can help solve the mystery, I may not have to take it all apart again. Thanks for any help.

If i were to take a guess its that you put the pully back on crooked and its rubbing on something or that its rubbing on maybe the oil pan or timing chain cover and shreding either the belt or the cover depening on what kind of fibers are coming out it could also be the oil pump gasket did u get that far into the motor or did u just do the belt? I would be very carefull though if it does break while its running u can prolly kiss it good bye so it may be worth taking back apart to check whats makin that noise! Did u put the main drive belt back on right is it really tight? Just giving some ideas.

Didn't touch the oil pump, but if it has a fiber gasket, that could be it. I'll tear it back down and see what it is. If you're interested I'll let you know. I don't think this is something that happens a lot.

pics of the fiber stuff would be good...

my first thought would be improper belt tension causing the noise, and it's possibly not lined up properly, causing the fiber stuff to shred off the edge of the belt.

I took it apart, and the edge of the belt was schredding. I looked for the cause and could find nowhere that it rubbed. The only thing it could be, is the belt was not all the way on the tensioner pulley. apparently I was in a hurry and didn't check it good. There is a definite cut about i/8 inch from thr side, on the back of the belt. This pulley is the only thing that touches the back side. I'm going to try to add pictures , if it works out. I've never done this.-- Apparently I can post attatchments. Don't know what I'm doing.

easiest way is to upload the pics to a server and post the links in here. cardomain.com is free and easy.

I'd definitely replace the belt.. $40 once you've got it apart is cheap and easy insurance against ruining the engine. been there, done that, cost the guy $2000 after my labor.
