96 I30 only ran 16.6@82, WHY???
I have just bought a 1996 I30 automaic. I took it to the track expecting low 16's or real high 15's but only got 16.8-16.6. The 16.6 was with the air filter removed. Later I ran a 16.7 with the air filter. Is the I30 that much heaver than the Maxima's, or is there another reason? And yes I know how to drag race so that's not it, I raced my other cars over 200 times.
Thanks

Can you please give us all the numbers on your timeslip? I only need the 60', 330', 1/8 and mph, 1000' and 1/4 and mph.
Also, can you please give me the exact date and time that you ran these times? And also, I will need the city and state that this track is located in. Also, what is the track's name? If you answer all these questions, I can answer yours. Thanks.

2. I bet those 18's are heavy and sucking out .2 and 2 mph
3. Atlanta in June is probably hot, so that is not helping much either.
4. Make sure the car is running in tip top shape before going to the track. Plugs, fuel filter, CEL codes....
I30 are not really much heavier than maximas at all. Mine weighs 3200 with me in the car....so about 3030 w/o me in the car. That is full interior, no weight reduction.
Ok, hear is the breakdown. From what I calculated, your car ran actually fast for a stock VQ Auto.
You ran in 85 degrees with 62% humidity and 30.12 on the barometer. That track is at 1100 feet elevation in Commerce, GA.
With those weather numbers, the air density when you raced was 3111 feet. So, since it was so hot, it was just like racing at a track at over 3000 feet elevation!! The general rule of thumb for actual elevation is "for every 500 feet, you get one tenth slower". I have found that true when jumping from track to track all over the nation. So, if you take that rule of thumb and apply it to 3111 feet air density elevation, then you will be about 6 tenths slower than stock numbers. But, in my personal experience with all the bracket racing I've done in different weather conditions, I have found that when you're talking about air density elevation equivalent, the rule of thumb is "for every 750 feet, you get one tenth slower in the 1/4 mile". So my guess is that you should be .47 slower in the 1/4 mile just due to the track and weather conditions you raced in.
Now, I agree with Mike when he said those wheels will slow you down about 2 tenths!!
Now, that's .67 that you are slower in the 1/4 mile.
That 60 foot is about normal for your car. I bet that 2.45 60' was only a "chirp chirp" off the line and not a loud long squeal. So you can't really improve in your 60 foot time of 2.45 unless you add on some power or gearing mods (small tires).
I bet on a good day with nice sea level air density elevation and stock wheels, you can run about 15.9s, which is a great stock time. That air filter removal might have shaved a half tenth at the most, so I didn't really add that into my calculating. BTW, at the Atlanta Dragway, it's going to take about 40-55 degrees for the air density to be zero feet, depending on the constant fluctuating of barometric pressure.
So in conclusion, you actually ran some great times considering you ran in crappy weather at a not so great track (1100' elevation). Be happy! Your car probably runs fine. You obviously know how to drive.

I knew that Atlanta's track was a little slow because, my friends EVO only runs 13.9@99 and 350Z' only run about mid 14's. I feel a little better about my times, I'll wait until the fall and run again, it will be much cooler. And I will have some more mods.
