swaping factory 8" sub
swaping factory 8" sub
i was thinking of swaping an aftermarket 8" sub in place of the factory sub and run it off the factory amp, or even run it off an aftermarket amp just use the factory wiring. i want something that is stealth and that i can run off my factory deck. anyone done this before?? how does it sound?? worth it??
I don't know a lot about audio systems but here's what I tried. I tried to run a 10 in sub off of the bose sub amp and not much sound came out the speaker. It sucked. I don't think you can use the bose amp b/c of the difference in Ohms. You have to use an aftermarket amp. Hopefully somebody on here can correct me if I'm wrong.
I took a look at this the other day, and it looks like the factory sub is a dual voice coil driver based on the connector with 4 wires heading into it.
Keep in mind this driver is also "free air" using the trunk as the enclosure, and any driver not meant for this type of operation will probably sound like crap. You can also damage it if it's not meant to work in this manner by streaching the spider assmbly when you crank it up.
Most likely, not enough sound means it's simply not moving enough and is meant for a tuned port setup or has a higher ohms rating than the OEM unit as mentioned above.
If somebody can get the specs on the stock driver, it would help in finding a replacement that's bigger, making more output.

When I asked a car audio shop they said that I would need some adaptor that would give me the sound quality of FM modulation.
Does this adaptor degrade the sound quality at all?
Was the shop just BS-ing me?
I would love to know because I have a 12" sub and 300 watt amp in my old car that I would love to put in my Infiniti.

I thought bout using 2 of those bose subs for rear doors and not using any kind of rear subwoofer or anything in the trunk.. I ran a bazooka tube when I got my Max- it was a 200W RMS 8" tube- from Crutchfied.... then I got me 3 JL Audio 10s, and now I have a Kicker CompCVR newest kind, with DVD, and 1 10" sounds better than anything I had with a good size Alpine amp 500X1 RMS Mono Sub amp. I'm thinking of moving up to 2 10s now cause one is nice but 2 would just slam.
Would it be possible to buy another 8" bose sub (the amp for it is in the plastic housing that it sits in isn't it?) and cut out another hole in the rear deck and hook that up to have 2 running at the same time? You wouldn't win any contests with this, but it would be a cost effective way to boost your bass. Would this work?

If you want to use a non bose sub off the bose amplifier sub output you need an extra amp for it.
So since the Bose sub runs off of it's own amp, it would be possible to add another Bose sub to increase the bass. You could add as many of those piece of ****t subs as you wanted to. Maybe I'll drill three more holes in the rear deck and have 4 Bose subwoofers bumpin'.
If you are not going to build an enclosure, then you must get a woofer that is designed for free air or IB (infinite baffle) use. I initiated a thread on the elitecaraudio forum to discuss this topic and received some recommendations which seemed to be ok. Check out this link: http://forum.elitecaraudio.com/showt...threadid=86640
The Bose amp in the OEM subwoofer will not have enough power to run an aftermarket woofer, you will have to purchase an external amp and wire it up. If the rest of your system is still OEM Bose then you can probably tap into the signal wires running from the small Bose Amp under the rear deck to get your signal and then run that into your amp. From what I've read, this works well and no adapters are required. You might want to confirm this in the maxima.org audio forum. If the rest of your system is already aftermarket, then you should be able to get signal outputs for your sub from your head unit. Just for your reference, there are a few sites of really high end drivers you should know about. They are:
www.solen.ca
www.madisound.com
www.zalytron.com
www.meniscusaudio.com
www.speakercity.com
www.partsexpress.com
There are others, but this should give you a start. Good luck.
