Well last night I was driving down a local road, the speed limit is 55MPH. I was at the light and as usual I had a little fun and accelerated hard off the light. I had the car in Drive #1 to force it into higher RPM's for a few seconds until the RPM's got to high and I pushed it back to Drive #2. At like 50MPH I pushed it back into drive, but the shifter went loose and it slipped into reverse, the tires screeched I heard some grinding, I popped into drive quickly but the car shut down and I had to pull to the side of the road without power anything

I let the car sit for a bit and then I started it, it ran fine, I ran through the gears and they all seemed ok.

This morning I went to pull out of the driveway and I noticed the the car jolted when I went to drive, it sounds like the gears aren't lined up and they are pushing hard to touch.

What kind of damage am i looking at?

I'm going to the mechanic tommorow and have him drain the fluid, hopefully there are no metal shillings in there and the tranny isn't completed screwed.

Now when you DO get a new tranny, and you mess around AGAIN. Do not push the button on the shifter. Just push the shifter forward and it won't got into reverse. You must of hit it hard to get it past drive and nuetral and into reverse.

 

What am I looking at for a new tranny?

 

I don't know about auto, my 5-speed was 2000. And it died of old age.

Dude, if you want to drive like that, buy yourself a manual, or an automatic that has the manual shifting feature. Sheeesh.

 

dam..after that u need a 6speed...get a manual trans to avoid this from happening again...dam

 

That's going to be quite an expensive "oops".

You're looking at well over the $2,000 if you want to just get a straight rebuild. You could go searching for a used tranny, which is what I'd do, and find a deal with a warranty, which would be cheaper.

If you're happy with your car, go for a 5spd swap, I think with either the VG or VE, it would be superior to the auto (at least in stock situations). When my auto goes out, I'm planning on doing that.

 

How much do you think it would cost for a 5spd swap?

 

I had my transmission replaced last year, (died from old age) I had a used one put in with like 60k on it for 1800. Keep in mind this was a 5spd though. I do agree that if ur gonna do it, do it right and go for the 5spd swap.

You may be lucky and only killed the mounts not the trans.

Well lucky as I am, there was no metal shillings in the fluid, so either it hasn't had enough time to show up, or not to much was ripped off. The tranmission mechanic said it was in good condition and would last a few more years, but I don't understand how thats possible because its still jolting pretty hard, anyway, thanks for all your help.

If the mechanic was wrong, I wouldn't bother doing a 5 spd swap unless you just REALLY like driving a 5 spd..I used to think I'd like to swap my auto for a 5 spd, but not anymore..my truck is a 4 spd, and while its kinda fun somtimes, I get sick of it since its nearly impossible to drink anything, and everyone here pulls up right on your back bumper at stop lights, and i mean right on it, like 2 inches away..
