VG 5-Speed Swap - Worth It?

I am looking into it myself. It should be considerably less than getting a new automatic transmission put in. I saw a quote somewhere (cant remember where off hand) for about 900 installed but I am not sure if that includes the transmission or not.
it was at maximumtuning.net but that is for 4th gens you would have to call them to find out.
For all the parts, etc, if you do it yourself, budget at least 900-1200 bucks. If you have a shop do it for you, tack on at least another 500-1000 bucks. I've done the swap before on a 4th gen, as well support a couple other local guys that did the swap on thier 4th gens. If you do it, you'll definately would need at least 1 or 2 extra pair of hands to help you. Also be prepared to have your car down for some time. On average, Joeblow should be able to do this with about a good 3-5 days worth of work...with a little knowledge of what he's doing. When we did iansw car, it took 3 weeks (actually it was 3 days of work, but because of parts issues, the car sat for 3 weeks).

I converted my 92SE Auto to a 5-speed in April. I had a parts car that I had gotten for $800. I put in an ACT clutch and a fidanza flywheel. I also ordered new boots, master and slave cylinders, lines, mount inserts, etc. I think I spend about $1600 by the time it was all said and done. I did all the work myself, with the exception of bleeding the clutch. It took me about 40 hours of work. The cars were side by side in the driveway, so I was able to take off of one and install on the other. I also installed a CAI at the same time, as I had the whole drivers side apart.
It was actually pretty easy. I'd never done a tranny job before. In fact, my experience mainly consists of doing a topend rebild of a VG... Sooo it was a little scary. I could do the job in waayyyy less time now.
That being said, I've got an VE auto tranny for sale with 67K on it.

im still workin' on this auto to manual swap and i know i read this in here before but still tryin' to figure out what exactly do i have to do to a VE 5-speed to work right with my VG. i know someone on here did it and it worked just fine. the reason being because isn't the VE 5-speed tranny better or stronger than the VG 5-speed tranny???
todamax: BTW is that VE tranny a 5-speed???

im pretty sure thonly thing different about the ve and vg trannys is the ve one has the lsd but i dont think the VE one is any stronger although i will know for sure in the comming weeks
tom use a VE tranny in a vg you need
ve lsd tranny
ve axles
ve hubs
thats the only difference from the vg to ve
yes the VE manual transmission is 5spd
the ve auto is 4spd

VG 5-Speed Swap - Worth It?
Hey people,
Haven't posted in quite some time. Did some lurking though..
Anyways,
This question is for those of you who have done a manual to 5-speed swap.
Was it worth the work?
Have you had any problems since the swap?
I'd really like to do the swap but I'm trying to decide if it will really be worth the effort involved in such a project.
I'd obviously do the swap myself to keep labour costs out of the equation.
Did you guys buy used manual trannies from the wreckers or japanese import shops?
I'm not interested in finding a VE 5-speed, it's VG 5-speed or bust for me. It seems that VG 5-speeds are terribly hard to find though.
Another question,
Did those of you who did the swap use the VE LSD tranny or the VG tranny?
I'd rather pick up an LSD tranny if I can but I guess we'll see what happens.
I have the write up printed out somewhere for a 4th gen tranny swap. I know there was a write up on a 3rd gen tranny swap though, so where could I find that?
Thanx,
Ryan

let me guess....the bearings wear worn?
im doing a 5 speed swap now, still looking for parts
money isnt the problem, everything is pretty cheap.
from what i herd the only hard part is mounting the new clutch and brake pedal, i have done that and it wasnt to hard... u hafta make a custom spacers for the clutch. (no biggie) still trying to find parts and tranny... vg lsd!
if u can get all your parts for cheap, the swap is worth it.
good luck

That's probably how he managed to run a 16.9@89 at the track, or at least he did according to the cardomain page.
It's called "merging" threads. Too many similar questions and too little researching by the noobie members

...i used to think I wanted to do a 5 spd swap..and I would if I could find a nice cheap 70s or earlier caddy in good running condition, but I want an auto so I'm not always driving a manual..I get kinda tired of driving my 4 spd truck somtimes..
I imagine its worth doing if you have somthing else to drive and a good garage to work in...if I get another auto, I'll prolly garage the max and start the show car transformation, starting with some way overdue maintenance..i cant AFFORD to drive my truck everywhere, so I've been babying the max with an old timing belt...25-35 mpg is worth the risk..my truck gets 3-5 on a good day off a cliff with a tail wind..
