How do u properly take off S/C to replace camshaft position sensor?
friggin sucks i got a bad sensor. My car just cuts off out of nowhere and if u try to start it, it acts as if it has no gas. It just keeps turning over but wont finish the start. I got the 01 01 code and i guess i just have to replace it but the S/C bracket seems to be in the way and i know there is more to just removing the bracket. Belt, pulley, gotta be so much more stuff. I have a V2, can someone tell me what needs to be removed so i can get to this sensor?
Tools needed, things to watchout for, etc. I'm a noob, i need this to be thoroughly explained to me. thanks.

I posted a brief guide in another thread on how to take off the SC:

You don't have to take off the S/C to remove the bolt retaining the CPS bracket (V2) for the sensor, right?
Sometimes if you don't push the CPS harness back in COMPLETELY it will not start too.

IIRC, it's still a PITA to get to CPS with the bracket on. Removing the S/C isn't that hard...just takes a couple of times before you get really fast at doing it. All you need to do is:
1. Remove charge piping
2. Loosen idler pulley
3. Undo the S/C belt from crank pulley
4. Loosen the clamp for the oil drain line
5. Depending if you want to remove the S/C completely, or move it to the side, remove oil feed line
6. Undo all the bolts for the S/C bracket (also keep in mind, there is an altenator mount bolt that goes through the bracket, be sure you do not completely remove this....just back it out enough to clear the S/C bracket...it's a PITA to put back in).
7. Remove S/C or move it out of the way to do work on your CPS.
8. Installation is reverse.
My suggestion since you have everything out, if your belt is looking worned, I'd replace it while you have the S/C out, or moved to the side. Either way, the more you remove and install the S/C, the quicker you can do it. iansw and I have it down to like a 30-45 minutes now.

It seems to me the the CPS is in a really bad spot that the harness seems to either rub up against something, or some how can get stuck in the way that it could ground out. I notice this problem when we reinstalled iansw S/C back in January. I wonder if there is something we can do to protect the sensor and harness??

my wire is ran over. I put a ratchet on the bolt and as i proceeded to twist, the engine mount was in my way and didnt give me enough room to to loosen bolt..at all. sucks, so close.

go to NAPA and go buy one gear wrench the type that twists at the handle so when you start turning you can turn the wrench away from the mount and turn it loose.

buy one number ten. I have a full set of these and two full sets of the regular gear wrenches. These come in very handy, especially if you have that SCer

Oh yeah! I remember it now! I've looked at all of the Craftsman tools at my local Sears store but I could never find it! Is there a part number for it?
