ECU code P1706, 2001 Maxima GXE, 43K Miles

ECU code P1706, 2001 Maxima GXE, 43K Miles.

Service Engine Light came on:
I tried to use the steps laid out in: http://vbxmaxima.8m.com/ecu.html
I couldn't find the "Diagnostic Test Mode Selector screw" So had to take to the dealer and he says the code was P1706, PN Switch was loose ?
Now, I couldn't find anywhere what P1706 corresponds to, and this guy is charging me $135(preliminary: $165) for seemingly small problem and initially said he would charge around $55 for small problems like loose gas cap.

When talking to my friend who owns a accord, he said his light comes up all the time when a service is due, and the guys at honda said it is nothing and would come up at 30K,45K,60K...... This incidentally happend to my maxi also at 30K which was covered under 36K warranty.

Did the Service Engine Light come up beacuse I was nearing 45K Mile service ? Should I be paying $135 as being demanded ?
Any advice from the experts in the forum is appreciated.

Parking Neutral Switch ? I dunno if they got a code like that since I don't have my manual with me to tell me what the code means. It should be covered under powertrain warranty.

Thanks for the reply BlackBIRDVQ.

Yes, It is indeed Park Neutral Position Switch that was loose as claimed by service.

P1706 Park Neutral Position Switch/Circuit

How can I make sure it is under powertrain warranty ?
Is there an official list for this ?

Thanks again.

explain to the service writer as to what is the role of this switch ? Now since the switch is part of the starting and runing functions of the car... its a powertrain warranty item ! Neutral Safety switch on Manuals is located on the clutch pedal. When U press in the clutch U can then start up a manual tranny car. On a automatic, the car has to be in park or neutral- why its called park neutral safety switch. I know over at Acura, our engine related equippment is sometimes good for 10 years or 150K miles. Or 5-60K mile powertrain warranty on all models. the 10year 150K mile warranty applies to certain models made in the late late 90s early 00 models is a emissions warranty.

I tried to argue with my minimum knowlege that it should be covered under powertrain warranty; he went back to check and said it is not covered. After protesting about the high price for a simple job, he finally came down to $110 from original quote of $165, so I got my car.

I would use the info you provided and ask nissan consumer folks for a refund.

Thanks
Mohan.

I had a few frayed wires which caused this problem, nothing to do with the PNP switch :-(
