Need help on a JDM VG30ET swap

I am doing the VG30ET swap and need to know which engine would be better. The guy I am using has a VG30ET that is complete out of a FWD car in Japan. He sent me pics of the engine and the intake looks like the one on the Maxima (except of course the plaque that says turbo) so my question is which engine would be a better swap this FWD vg30et or the 300zx vg30et engine?

ummm it doesnt matter. A motor is a motor...it doesnt care if its going in a FWD or RWD. Unless it has different specs from the Z motor then it really doesnt matter.

Is the trans included? If so, go FWD. Also, wasn't the A31 RWD?

I asked him if he knew what car the motor came from. He did not remember he said it was a 2 door sedan. I will post pic of the motor tonight when I get off work.

Just motor. Right now I have an AT Maxima but I just got all the parts so I will swap it to a 5spd, and will do the turbo swap at the same time.

Thanks I did already read (and of course save this page I was sure it could help) but I over looked this one line.

Q: Which engines can I put into my Maxima?
A: For the engine swap you will want to use the VG30ET from an 87-89**** 300ZX Turbo or you can also get the JDM VG30ET that I believe came out of the Nissan Gloria. The 87-89 VG30ET and the JDM VG30ET are nearly identical except for the intake and the cams. The JDM engine has the Maxima style intake and is supposed to have euro cams which are good for a 10 hp increase on a forced induction engine.

So it sound like if I get that engine I will have less work (don't have to swap intake) and an extra 10 horse sounds like a good deal.

Most definately a good deal. Where did you find this engine at? The only problem will be relocating the turbo but that will easily run for about $250 and then some type of fuel management. I hear ebay calling you out.

Can't forget about JWT. Plus time for aluminum flywheel, stage 3 clutch.

Planning starts now I get the engine on Tuesday and start going down my wish list. But I still want to opinions, still not sure if I am going to run the T3 or do T3/4 hybrid. Before I go to wild on my wish list let me state I am here in California and have to pass emissions thats why I need to get back in contact with JWT and work on a ecu and see here I stand on injectors.

If you're in Cali you need to be able to pass the inspection part of the emission test too, and I don't remember a turbo being CARB approved for our cars.
of course here in illinois I can swap in a BBC as long as my emission output doesn't change

In cali you can put any maxima engine in our cars as long as its a newer model year. I don't know about the turbo, but they might not fail you for that. I guess it depends on where you go. Maybe you can get away with changing the designation of your car, but I don't know what that intails.

There are still a few places here that don't care about the visual as long as it burn clean enough.

From what I've found out these engines came out of a Gloria which are RWD. The only differences due to being RWD are the wiring harness, which won't matter since you'll be using the Maxima's harness, and the coolant tubes under the manifold. Those need to be changed out since they are setup differently than the Maxima's coolant tubes.

Good luck with the swap and everything! It is definitely worth the blood, sweet, and tears because in the end... the thing is an absolute blast to drive. Mine is real fun to drive and I actually don't have it to its real potential yet. I have the small 300ZX turbo, no intercooler, and am barely tuned at all. If I get a nice t3/t4 or a t3/60-1, an intercooler, and tune it better the thing should absolutely fly. It will probably be a while before any of that happens since I picked up the new project, 75 Datsun 280Z and a 90 Infiniti Q45 for the engine and a few other things. Nissan 4.5 liter V8 in a 280Z... can't wait!

Heh, I have the picture of his car on my desktop as well. 720 hp in a 240Z... he's going to twist the chassis pretty well unless he builds it up pretty good (which he probably did). Some guys on hybridz.org are saying with 550-600 rwhp the Z's should be in the high 9's, low 10's. That is what I'm aiming for...

Todays plan is to most likely take out both the Q engine and the Z's engine so I can start measuring and see how I'm going to mate the TTZ gear box to the VH45. Shouldn't be too hard but I won't really know until I look at it.

On another note I found a bomb in the trunk of the Q... well... at least that's what it looked like. I smelled gas fumes coming from the trunk and couldn't figure out what it was for a while. I thought it was the TT tranny since it was at a salvage yard but it turns out the gas tanks in inside the trunk of the Q. Freaked me out when I first saw it.

Now to get back on topic.
As for the Maxima, I bought some TT rods, pistons, and the crank so that will be going in my old Maxima block hopefully soon. I'll be kind of working on both projects at once hopefully. If not the Z will come first but that Maxima will get finished regardless.

The only thing I can't decide on is whether to order some forged pistons for the Z stuff or just use the stock cast pistons. I'm leaning toward forged since I will be able to of course handle more power but more importantly I'll get them slightly oversized so that I can have a fresh bore and hone done to the cylinders to have proper clearances for the pistons.

I'm hoping for 350-400 at the wheels with the Maxima but since, with the Z internals, it can handle more I might try for 500-600... just so I can watch my tranny go boom.
