which one is better- stick on or a clip on? why? does it make a difference if its OEM or aftermarket? what's the width I should select if it's aftermarket? (I know I can measure it, but I am at work now). Also, any one brand better than the other? why?

Thanks

I went right to Nissan for mine, it ran me $62.00 but hey.. I like stock things.. i.e. the spoiler I just bought is a stock Maxima spoiler. either way.. it's a little harder to put on.. but noones taking it off. I'd go with your local nissan dealership.

I am looking at several aftermarket ones and they all run $20-25. How do you justify $62 at the dealership? if it's better (how) that's one thing, but if you are just being overcharged for it, it's another.......

The main justification i have is the "look". I searched all over the internet and found a heep of different kinds that ran from $20-80. Personally I like the way it looks as compared to the aftermarket ones, I am farmiliar w/ the design from seeing them on the road. Another thing was piece of mind.. I felt a hell of a lot better knowing that when I got it, it was going to fit, and it was going to fit perfect. Comfort is worth the couple extra bucks. Just my opinion. Good Luck.

If you get the OEM deflector, use the 240 SX holding clips. The Maxima ones WILL NOT fit, and the Pathfinder ones just barely do. Got mine off of E-Bay for like $30.

Should I just get pathfinder's deflector instead? Is it different from the one for Maxima? Is OEM really better than aftermarket? how bad is it to use the double-sided tape?

Thanks a lot

Nissan uses the same deflector for the Maxima and the Pathfinder, along with the 240SX, its just the clips that hold it on that are different, and if you get the OEM kit, then all of the different clips come with it. Don't use double sided tape for two different reasons. Firstly, it will destroy the paint under the deflector, and secondly, you will never get the clips to fit if you do. There is about 1 mm of free space to work with even if you work with the 240 SX clips and using the tape will make it next to impossible to work with. I haven't used a aftermarket deflector, so no comment.

Did you have a hard time getting them on? I asked about this on the forum before and quite a few people also have had problems getting the Maxima clip to clip on the bottom side of the tip without thinking that they were going to crack the deflector. BTW, my bad, its the 240 clips that I used, not the Pathfinders.

i bought a deflector from ATV and returned it because it doesnt have clips, it sticks to your roof... i didnt like that idea it would look bad... ill get the one from nissan one of these days, its probably like $20 more so its worth it to have the one that clips on.. just my opinion

Just a longshot...

But does any one know if the 5th gen deflector fits? My neighbor's 2001 came with one, and he doesn't like it. He's willing to give it up if it fits.

I got an OEM one off ebay; a dealer in the northeast sells em there all the time i think; i used the maxima hardware, it took a little while but once you get the threads of the nut started it works fine.

i paid around 40 plus shipping and i've seen some aftermarket ones and given the price I don't know why people go that route.

Well IF I was going to buy one I would go the Dealership route, my peace of mind on fit would be worth the extra$$$$.

I don't have one and never will as I enjoy the little extra Ventilation w/o the shield......

I just installed the OEM deflector. Took 30 minutes. The 1st clip was easy. I got it clipped in less than a minute. The 2nd clip took me 25 minutes Anyhow, getting the OEM is definitely worth it. The instructions are easy, it came with more clips than I needed (240 and Pathfinder as well.) What really did it for me (as well as the other reasons mentioned above)is this one simple fact: no glue/sticky tape involved whatsoever. So if one day I need to do maintenance on the sunrrof or something, I can take it off and put it back with no problems.

Enjoying my deflected sunny ride

I took mine off...

I have been driving my '97 SE for like a year now, and I just decided to take mine off (it came with it when I bought it...)

The reason why is that I started noticing a low speed rumble from the wind not being properly deflected. It was like a really low bassy sound. I hated that sound, usually at around 15mph. So after a whole year I took it off... I don't think it did too much in quieting the sunroof open or even deflecting the wind. My car is now *quieter* without that damn thing with the sunroof open or vented. No more loud noise on the freeway, and I haven't noticed a big change in more wind coming in. I think it is much better with out it... Besides, without it is how Nissan spent *years* testing that design for the car. Not with a deflector on it... And plus, no more bassy sound. (At any speed.)

The quality of the Nissan air deflectors is tenfold the quality of those cheap stick on kinds you'll find at the local autoparts store. The deflector is thick and up to Nissan standards. Check out www.nissanparts.com for a great price. I think I paid about $42.00 for mine.

Re: I took mine off...

15 mph lo rumble?? Hmm, I'll have to listen for that. But anyhow, at 15 mph, the deflector is not really doing anything.

As for your car being quieter without it, I can't imagine how. It think this may come down to our differing cruising habits. I tend to cruise at hi speed, like 75-90 mph, so the benefit of the deflector around then is massive I can listen to my stereo without having to make it struggle against all the wind noise, and there's much less buffeting in the cabin because of it. The faster you go, the more beneficial it is.

On a slightly different note, I had that little spring loaded deflector that pops up when you open the roof. After a while it started rattling, so I completely removed it. So, adding the rooftop deflector really improved things for my situation.

I got one from Pepboys..

cost me around 25 bucks, it's the one you tape on, comes with double sided tape... It's universal, fits great, not sure about how long it is but it tapes right around the edges of the roof opening... Still holds awsome and it's been on for over 8 months through all kinds of weather.
To me, it doesn't even matter if it's the one with clips or not, if you do not plan on removing it ever, like I don't plan on removing mine, I just went ahead with the one you tape on. Cheap and holds well... I was thinking of switching over to the really "flat" deflector which doesn't stick out that much and it's nice and flat..but this 1 is cool.
