muffler idea
muffler idea
I posted this on the yahoo board and did not get much. Anyway I have a friend that just gave me the stock muffler off his 350Z. I am going to take it to my exhaust guy and see what he thinks. THe problems I know I would run into right off the bat would be: muffler hanging too low because of the spare tire well. Also the stock Z exhaust comes down the driver side...therefore the intake pipe on the muffler is coming in the opposite side than our car. So basically I would have to flip the muffler over, which would then involve cutting the tips and re welding them right side up. Anyway I know it sounds like a pain and I know it probably will not work, but the muffler was free to me so I think I will take it to my exhaust guy....let me know what you guys think. If you dont like my idea or think there is no way in the world it will work then please recomend a muffler for under 80 bux that sounds good. I was also looking at a SS (not polished) magnaflow for $58. Let me know what you guys think.

The only problem I see you are mentioning. The muffler sits parallel to the bumper instead of perpendicular like the stock. Also I dunno how that would look on our cars with a psuedo-dual exhaust...so it may stand out. I mean most muffler shops could probably make it work, but it may not look that good. You could ditch your spare (and free up like 30-40 lbs of weight doing it), hammer in the spare well. I think picking up a Magnaflow and having that installed would be cheaper though. The custom work to get the Z muffler to fit will also be like 200-300 bucks. (Cost me over 100 just to adapt a 4th gen stillen muffler to my car).

I am going to go talk to the guy today, but he hooks me up, there is no way I would spend even close to 3-4 hundered dollars...he is a buddy of mine and likes doing custom stuff on my cars. And yes I am thinking it would look wierd as well but the only reason I am even considering this is because the muffler is free to me...its in my trunk right now....and I am really not interested in cutting out my spare tire well...I want my car to be functional as well....I'll let ever one know what he says...I will probably end up getting a magnaflow
Yeah, can't beat free, but I don't know how it can be pulled off with out some sort of body modification to make it look good. Either way, it's definately worth asking your friend. He could probably tell you for sure exactly what would be needed.

Well if you think about it, with glass packs, they make more noise, BUT they also have little scoops that sit in the exhaust stream that forces gas into the glass packing to reduce noise...but if your looking for performance, this will hurt exhaust velocity and probably give you no gains to a slight gain if you up the diameter. My suggestion is using a straight through performance muffler, like a magnaflow, 2.5" max piping from at least the cat back, and you'll get a nice sound (as long as you keep the stock cat and precat). My car is setup like that, and it's surprising quiet, but still got a nice deep tone to it.

talked to the exhaust guy.....looks like I am going to ditch this idea and just go with a magnaflow...let me know if you know of any good places to get a good price on a magnaflow...I have been looking on ebay.
I agree with Sarin on the Glasspack's, old technology, and they tend to sound really slappy and disgusting. Kind of like the sound of a big hole in your muffler. You should be able to get a Flowmaster 40 series for under 80 bux too, mine was $85 CAD new. I like the sound, very quiet at idle with just a bit of rumble, a little loud when you're on it but still smooth sounding. I have my cat still but no resonator any more. Best I can describe it is it is similar to Sarin's if you have seen his video, but a little louder, and just a bit harsher when the revs get up there, and about the same at idle. I can get a clip of the sound if anyone wants.
