start engine w/o MAF

I just got some throttle body cleaner and it says to spray it into the throttle body while the car is running. I know you're not supposed to start the engine with the MAF disconnected, but can you start it with the tube connected to the throttle body disconnected (to get access to the throttle body) but the MAF still plugged in? Also, is it safe to use this same stuff to clean the MAF? It kinda says on the bottle to not spray it across the air filter or the MAF, but the guy at the auto parts store said it would be ok...

Do not use this crap, remove your air intake tubing, remove the 4 throttle body 12mms that hold the throttle body to the intake manifold. Your gonna have to remove a few electrical plugs also. I stuff a rag in the intake manifold to cover up the hole and then drench the throttle body with carb cleaner. I let it sit for a little while, then with a tooth brush clean everything out and spray it off with some brake parts cleaner. Reinstall the Throttle body and do not touch the MAF. AutoParts store guys are as knowledgeable about the stuff they sell as my 80 year old grandma is with computers ! Half the time these guys are high school drop outs driving old rusted out Camaros with carburators on them.

Why spray everything off with brake parts cleaner? Would another pass with the throttle body cleaner not do?

brake parts cleaner- dries very quickly- Valvoline one atleast, what I use at work. Most Carb cleaners take a long time to evaporate.

I just took a look at it and there's alota things connected to the throttle body =P. I don't even know which bolts to remove to get it off. Can you take a couple pics to clarify some things for me? I'd much rather remove it to clean it like you said, but I want to make sure I'm not breaking anything and can put it back together =P. Thanks! Or if anybody has a writeup on how to remove 5th gen throttle body, it would be alot of help!

I will have the final pictures of the automatic to manual conversion I done on a 00 Maxima and I can use MS Paint or something to circle the bolts and connectors (in the picture) you'll need to take off in order to get the throttle body off.

Why are you not suppose to start the engine with the MAF disconnected. It should run but not rev above 2500 rpm and it will set a Malfunction code in the ECU that should be cleared.

Me personally I would not spray anything into the throttle body. Between the seals and the idle stepper motor I would be afraid of damage. I've had carb cleaner mess up rubber seals pretty bad.
