I've noticed that some of the chrome paint is fading from the 'MAXIMA' letters on my trunk. I know how easy it is to take them off which got me thinking about some shaved trunk pics I saw awhile ago. I thought it looked odd at first but it might also compliment the sleeper/stealth philosophy I've applied to the outside of the car. Perhaps if the police can't read what kind of car whips by them, they'll have a harder time describing it to others on the radio. Granted, this is a longshot, but it just might be crazy enough to work.

Some questions for those of you w/ a shaved trunk:

1. Did you do it stricly for cosmetic reasons? Are there any other benefits?
2. How difficult is it to get the adhesive off the paint?
3. Does the same 'faded paint' problem apply here as it does with removing pinstripes?
4. Did you ever regret doing it? Why/why not?

Any info would be appreciated!
Thanks!

Picture of letters removed..>

1. I took them off because of they were pealing...5 years will do that.

2. Think of it as rubber cement. Use you fingernail and it
***** up and comes right off.

3. Not sure about paint fading. The paint was perfect under the letters and after a little Meguires Cleaner wax is was perfect. The cleaner wax will get rid of the imprints.

4. I like the clean look and it's easier to wax now.

Shaved trunk

Yup........easy as JeffK makes it sound.......took me maybe an hour tops to remove, clean and wax. I used dental floss to slide under the letters to get started. Home depot sells this stuff called "Undo" (target and craft stores have it too) to remove the goo.......didnt mar the paint at all.

Easy mod.......and looks good i think. No regrets.

shaved trunk

I had mine shaved and liked it alot. I have the sleeper type look also. Another alternative that I have switched to is to paint the MAXIMA sign the same color as the car. I realize this looks good only with certain colors, but with black it looks great I think. Anyway...just another option. The letters are very easy to remove and I just used goo-gone for the excess.

Eeek... no need for that its "paint remover" whats your car covered with?

It'll come right off with no problems. I used some bug and tar remover when I took the goo off. Its simple. If I did it today I'd use WD-40 that works a ton better at removing stuff then the bug and tar remover. Wd-40's awesome stuff. Most of it will come off with a fingernail.

Anyhow I did it because I was tired was getting wax cramed around the letters. The A and M's are pains to get it out. Its now a ton easier to clean. Looks better too IMHO...

Oh ya wax the area too when your done with it.

Btw... Jeff... Thats a big white rear end you got there... hehe...

Protection from the elements...>

It's a painted surface without wax and also the letters
leave a slight imprint...wax removes this.
