The entire housing is normal, should have only been $14-$16 if ya didnt get ripped off. its really nice unit considering all the local Auto parts stores want $30-$35 for the same thing.
NO dont use silicone sealer....Buy that gasket from nissan and use that only...They put it on there from the factory for a reason right ?
as for advice, change out the bottom hose while your at it

I just reused the old gasket and it sealed well. By the way, the gasket is metal in case you want to know. The one came with the OEM replacement I got from Autozone was paper, didn't work well while putting it, I had to reuse the old one.

I just used the paper one that came with the replacement t-stat, has worked fine for 9 months now, you just need to make sure that it is alligned properly and doesn't get folded over on itself

The information I gave your Valid...I just put my S/C Kit in with an upgraded thermostat housing and it doesnt leak one bit..

Buy a New gasket ($2-4) and replace it...If Nissan tells you they dont have one, tell them to order it in

I agree there is a gasket. I changed mine recently when I did my waterpump.
Buying a lower hose as well is good advice....
