Sounds from front end at higher speeds - please help!

Hi Guys,

I know there have been a lot of posts on sounds coming from the front, wish I could search. But, lately I've been hearing sounds (sort've like knocking or clunking sounds) coming from the front when I drove above 40 mph. I don't really hear them below that, maybe occassionally, but it becomes a lot more frequent at speed. It's random and doesn't occur in the same intervals. It happens on smooth roads and is not related to bumps or anything. Actually happens more on smooth roads. I'm thinking it's some part related to the rotation of the front tires, but I'm not sure what. Anybody know?

I recently had my front CV axles replaced, and my front right sway bar link. The left sway bar link still looks fine. Any idea anyone??

Thanks!

Two question, does it happen when your car speed is stable and do you have wind deflector on your hood??

It happens when it is stable or when I am accelerating as long as it's above 40 mph. I don't have a wind deflector on my hood, but have a moonroof deflector. It's definitely coming from the front and feels like the bottom of the car.

I don't know if this will sound stupid but, you know how like sometimes you push a shopping cart and one of the wheels is loose and kinda flaps/wiggles back and forth? It sounds like that... haha. I don't feel any vibrations in my steering wheel though. It's completely stable, and turns fine. It's just the noise.

That sounds like a wind deflector or one of your protective plate under your car near the bumper, i had the same noise three month ago and it was my wind deflector (hood), i didn`t find it until my wife listened to the car while i passed on the street.

Check the splash guards under the front end. Make sure there all secured.

I don't have a hood deflector, but I could check the plate under my car. The thing is, although I mentioned that my steering wheel is stable and doesn't vibrate or anything, when I heard the sound I sometimes (and only somtimes) feel it in my steering wheel and pedals. The feeling is VERY faint though.

I also don't have splash guards.

but i'll check the protective plates again.

I checked and all the protective plates in the front under my car seem secure. Anything else you guys think might be the problem?

would any of the rotating parts/axle create this noise? because it only happens occassionally under 40, but pretty frequent above 40 or so...

I have a '97 SE Black with a simalar noise, question when it's making the noise and you push the clutch in does it change?

Do you have suspension done? Cause if you have adjustible shocks it could be a shock, or a shock may be blown or a loose part somewhere in your housing for your shock tower. Could be a number of things. I had a problem like that before, but it was the shock, it had to be tightened. They are adjustible. Check it out.

I have an automatic. It's not really dependent on what gear I am in, or whether I am accelerating or slowing down. Your sound changes when you push the clutch?

My suspension is stock. I probably should say that I have 96,500 miles on my car, but a month ago a mechanic said there's nothing wrong with my shocks (this was prior to the noise). At the time, I had my cv axles and right sway bar link replaced. Before replacing the sway bar link, it used to make a similar noise... but only when I was going over bumps or when I was slowing down. This time, it's on randomly, so I don't think it's the sway bar links.

Oh, and something weird happened today. When I braked on a hill (only going at 30 mph), i felt this grinding noise (kinda like when you veer off the inside lane on the highway and hit that ridged belt). It's only happened once, but definitely felt like it was coming from the car and not something I ran over.

I dunno if the two sounds are related in any way... but the big thing is the knocking sound when I'm driving

Take your car to a shop man, have them check it, that does not sound like a good thing.

haha yeah in the end i think it'll boil down to that. i'm going to do it eventually, but usually just have busy schedules and need my car everyday, so wanted to see if anyone had similar problems or knew what was wrong... :\

This happened after I drove around in a dirt/pebble parking lot. Is there any rotating area under the front end that could lodge a pebble or something for a long time and be making these noises?

yeah mine's almost like a grinding noise too... did you feel any vibrations in your steering wheel?

I checked my lugs and there were actually 3 of them loose on one side. Weird thing is I haven't felt any vibrations in my steering wheel. I do feel a slight "pulse" when I hear the sounds sometimes though, but not all the time.

So I tightened it but the sound is still there. I'm wondering if I need to take off my wheel and put it back on just to make sure everythign is lined up. I'm going to try that later and hopefully the sound will go away, b/c this is frustrating!
