Exhaust System

I have a 96 GXE and the exhaust system is really rusted and needs to be replaced. I took it to a muffler shop and they quoted me 332 including the cat.conv. Once he put it on the lift and looked at it he tried telling me 1800. He said that the universal parts couldn't be used and the factory parts had to which are more expensive. Is this true and why do they have to use factory parts? When I got the first quote they knew what kind of car it was but the price changed once they looked at it.
Help Please...

It doesn't hurt to go to a few other muffler places for more quotes.

For $1800 they're trying to rip you off. You can pick up an Apexi WS catback for way less than that.

Take a look at this link:

If he's trying to sell you the whole system for $1800 that is just a huge rip off, but not as bad as you may think, check out the price on the stock pieces, especially the OEM y-pipe, they're quite expensive. I would do the above, replace the y-pipe and b-pipe with a good aftermarket one so that you can spend less, decrease weight and increase power. Replace the other pieces only as you need to because a non stock muffler will increase sound quite a bit.

He broke it down like this:
muffler 199
front pipe 80
front converter 234
converter assembly 1200

and 120 for labor (2hours)

What do you all think?

Whats a converter assembly?

If you want to replace the entire exhaust system do what RastaManMax says. You'll get more bang for the buck there. If its only rusted out between the catalytic converter to the muffler then either replace that with the Apexi or go to Grand Muffler. The Apexi WS has been reported here to be the most quietest without the Y-pipe modification.
