For anybody that's had their knock sensor replaced by a dealer or shop, how much was it?

Try your hardest to DIY......if not, see if a local member can help you out.

 

The book rate for Nissan dealers is over $300 I believe.

 

About 500+ with parts and labor, just take the 15 minutes to do, its not that hard, breaker bar and a 1/4 ratchet and some bloodshed, its not that bad.

 

Bloodshed is critical. w/o it, you're SOL.

To give you an idea of my hand size I usually wear a medium to large size when wearing those disposable latex gloves.

With the instructions here it wasn't so bad to do it yourself.

So after reading all about the KS today, I decided to check out my newly acquired 96 SE, and there it was, the 0304. Sweet!

Checked the resistance, and it was 562 kOhm. Ok, so I went and ran it hard through up through the top end of 4th from a stop , and it felt fine (but I haven't had it too long, so I don't have a real reference point).

Got home and reset the ECU, but I still got 0304.

Anything else I can check before I bite the bullet and take it to a shop? Does it have to be a Nissan dealer, or would my friendly/good local mechanic be able to get more info? I'd really rather not take it to a shop, but I dunno how much just having them run the diagnostics would cost me. $50? I'd almost rather replace the sensor for $75.

Replacing the KS is easy, everyone should do it themselves. Im a big guy with big hands and I replaced mine in under 30 mins. I found it easiest to use a long box wrench and a screwdriver to help with the leverage. I also removed my EGR solenoid to give a little more room which is only held on by one bolt and a couple vacuum lines. Save yourself the money, do it yourself.

 

K-Y is a good idea but it would'nt work as its incompatible with rubber things (eg. hoses, condoms, etc).

Don't get discouraged! I was getting frustrated and almost went to the stealership until I tried loosening it again and was successful.

 

I wish it was that easy on the VE. you have to remove the upper and lower intake manifold, and the water pipe running through the V in the block.. might as well change the water pump while you're in there, cause you have half the bolts off already. it's a 6-8 hour job.

I'm just gonna bolt that biatch to the front of the block instead of tear the engine apart.
