Did I kill my rear brakes yesterday? :(

Hi,

yesterdag I had to fly to the docter with my little sister, she was screaming from pain in her stommache so I dropped her in the max as fast as I could, start the engine, and took off, in my pannic I must have somehow forgot to check the e-brake, it wasn't fully down, but with all the stress I completely missed it... when I arrived at the doctor (pretty damn fast!) I got out of the car and noticed a not so sweet smell, and smoke comming of of the rear brakes ooops!

No time to worry bout that at the time I took my sis to the docter and they helped her, called my parrents if they could come to pick me up cuz I'm not sure if it is safe to drive the max now this has happened, the whole trip was slightly more then 1 km, but I don't know what impact it had on my rear discs...

Will it be safe to drive the max home now? Is it just that the brake pads hve worn a big deal because of this, or do I have to be troubled for my brakediscs?

Please enlighten me, I miss my car, but it would suck if I need new brakes, don't have that kind of money right now

In that distance shouldnt be too bad. Though I'm sure with the heat there was some accelerated wear. It will be okay to drive as long as you remember to put the ebrake down. Check for cracks and such. BTW, how's your sis? I've drove down a mountain where I had the same thing happen (smoke) It's driveable.

You might have to replace the pads, even the rotors, but i'd have no fear drive the car home or to a garage to get it inspected / fixed.

Fried. Kentucky Fried. The rear should be the worst.

What do you mean?
The rears are the only ones affected here.

His fronts wont be affected AT ALL. And a 1/2 mile shouldnt have done much to the rears. .

Hopefully my max will be to, I drove that thing harder then any time before, if I recall the memory, I get the shivvers of all that acceleration! Have to do that **** more often, but then with the ebrake down... how stuppid I feel.

It's good that there aint no speeding controll in our little humble town, flew thrue that village litterely.

They should be fine...run your finger over the rotor and see if they are rough....E brakes on our generation have not been that reliable anyway. You just heated up the pads and thats what you smelled

I totally agree with you, should be fine. Just imagine if you were descending Mt. Washington and decided to put your car in neutral, you'd be placing a serious stress on the brakes (in that case the fronts), but the system should be able to take it. Where I think real damage could take place is on a vehicle that has brake shoes (drums) or 4 discs plus shoes inside the discs (like older Volvos)--imho linings are way more susceptible to premature wear from failing to release the e brake.

Why do you people try to make it seem like his car is going to blow up... You more than likely did no damage to your brakes other than maybe wore them down a little. Dont worry about these tards saying you fried your brakes. If you only went a mile then your alright.

I had a similar situation happen with ebrake before, but it all turned out fine. (And no I did not go drive around with ebrake up). I had my rear brakes replaced anyway because they needed to be even before, but otherwise minimal damage was done. You should still have them checked out by your mechanic, unless you know what you're doing.

I hope your sister is ok and gets better soon.

Thnx guys, realy apriciate the help en support!

@bluFlame: I litteraly smoked everything on my way lol

@the others: Thanx for the info, help en support!

Today I went to pick up my ride, put the E-brake down en checked 5 times
Then I took of, drove around a bit, and gave it time to heat up the engine...
Had to feel that power again! Got at a stoplight and a riced Honda Accord 2.0 DOHC stood next to me, that was the time I thought, so revved the engine en honked my horn to the guy, he revved his engine and I thought okay, here we go, lights got green, I made a pretty bad start, but once I took off I flew right pass him in a few seconds, left the dude behind and ate him alive Man, I knew they should be fast, but this fast I didn't know! Keeps making power all up to 6700 rpm when the limiter spoils the fun. My car is equiped with a MEVI intake, since we european lucky *****es have those stock... good for me huh? However, now I have tasted this power, I wanna use it all the time, every time I pulled away before, changed in to launching now, every corner turned into a rollarcoaster experience... men this **** is adictive Ow yeah, and the speedlimit's around here are in KPh but seem to forget it aint MPh... strange hm? LOL

Probably no need to be alarmed... but regardless of the distance travelled he had smoke coming from his rear.

It wouldn't hurt to check the rotors and pads in the rear and all rubber hoses in the front and rear. The possibility that the heat damaged something is small but not something I would gamble my life on if I needed them to stop me in a hurry.

That kind of heat could cause cracking in the pad material, cracking in the rotor, damage to the caliper pin covers and piston rubber, and in the unlikely case that he boiled his brake fluid - damage to any other rubber parts in the entire system - not to mention deteriorated brake fluid. Don't forget that the rear bearings got cooked as well. Any one of those or a combination of them could be minor in the short term and catastrophic at a future date when he needs his brakes to stop him in an emergency.

If it were me personally, I would just take it easy on the way home and then yank the wheels (front and rear) for a spot check. Wouldn't take more than half an hour to check everything and you know you are good to go.
