I start the car this morning and get a slight shake, slightly rev the engine to about 2k, and it feels uneaven and off-balance, like it's misfiring on one of the cylinders. I immediately get a "check engine light". Having no choice I dirve it slowly to work, taking it easy and making sure not to rev above 2k or so. The car felt sluggish, like it lost a good ammount of power. Once the car warmed up, the problem went away, and the power returned. After work I took it to autozone for a obd2 reading - this time the car idled just fine when started - and got a p1320 code, or "ignition system failure" according to the abd2 scanner. This same stuation happened about two months ago or so but has not thrown a light and untill today has not recurred. I know our Ni$$an put crap coils in our cars - have I been blessed with a bad coil (or two)?

 

I Have had the it come up about 3 times. I have not replaced the coils yet and I have 95K miles. Hope fully they will hold up unitl I can get the money.

 

Yes its the coils. Smae thing happened to my 2000 I30. Since its hard to say which coil is bad, and they all tend to go over time, replace all six yourself for $300.00. Thats what I did and the car runs better than when it was new, which tells me the coils were bad from day one to some degree. If you know how to changes plugs you can change the coils since they just sit on top of the plugs

 

Had exact same problem. You own a 2k max with cali emissions.
Anyways, I put in 6 new coils and 4 new sensors (412 total for parts)

with those miles, you should replace all 6. pm twillin. he has them for $240.00. i had 2 bad coils, and changed all 6 and changed the plugs as well. ran like new after that

 

You can tell which ones are bad. With the car running, take one of em out off the spark plug but leave it connected then hold a screw driver next to it not around the opening on the bottom, around where the rubber is suppose to keep it insulated. I believe. Keep in mind to only do one at a time or the car will cut out, with one out it will just ruff idle. Im bad at explaining, but make sure u wrap the handle of the screw driver with electrical tape. But when you run it accross u going to look for a spark going over to the screw driver. Thats the way to do it if you only have money for one.

 

This is a regular, normal, comun problem of this gen 5, Nissan they know about it, but 4 some reason the coils for 2y1 are lightly diferrent maybe they updated maybe not, that happend to me, me my car was almost 34k miles, someone said get the 2y1 and replace the plugs as well, but i went a little far and replace the 02, and many parts more, since then I feel the car running fine... Good luck!!!!

 

Lol, just thought of something, when mines messed up I didnt even have the money for one, so I wraped them in electrical tape, like 4-5 layers and the car ran alot better too

Some days back I cut corners and went from 89 chevron to 87 (**** gas) and since then I have been having all sorts of problems with the ignition system.

Many P1320 codes (then reset) and then came the big one P0306 (6th cylinder). I removed the coil and the plug -- the plug was host and replaced it with another one and it too went off. I have changed the coil and now got another misfire.. It seems to never end. I have replaced all the plugs with the old set (OEM that came with the car) and run it for a few hundred mile and check back on the state of the plugs... If it has arched the plugs then it is time to replace the remaining 5 coils and 6 plugs. Man a $400 + $60 (plugs) -- nice bill. Iam glad I know how to replace them -- don't have another $180 for labor.

 

Thats some steep bills! It just shows that cutting corners on gas is not a good idea. I never did cut corners on gas - the manual recommends premium fuel, plus timing advanced TDC 17 = 93 octane ALL the time
