Synthetic motor oil........Amsoil vs Mobil1
I'm considering switching to synthetic on my 98 SE auto. I've read where Amsoil is supposedly superior to Mobil1.......can any of you support this? Is anyone running either of these motor oils with favorable results? Thanks in advance for the info.

If you download the spread sheet in the lubrication section and look closely at the information collected you'll see Castrol GTX is probably the best motor oil you can put in our engines. Don't waste your $$ on synthetics, they really don't protect you any better.

Mobil vs. Amsoil, I'd get whichever is cheaper/easier to find. The differences in actual application between the two in our cars is surely negligible.
If you plan to run your car to the MAX, use a synthetic. Factories don't put synthetics in Porsches and vettes for nothing. They figure buyers are going to try and run the hell out of these cars. Either one Amsoil or Mobil One is fine!!
You started it and I'll end it
Amsoil and Mobil 1 are probably about the same in their quality. Amsoil fans might not like that, but Exxon Mobil has many years of refining expierience, and many years of experience developing synthetics, and with current production methods, they are really using a forefront process for composing synthetic lubricants. Amsoil guys are like a cult as far as I'm concerned, so they'll always "know a guy who did this" or "used the oil this way and it did that" so take them how you want them, as cult stories, urban legends, whatever. Mobil is going to be, on average, the more affordable option, and more readily available. If you're stuck the butt crack of nowhere and need a litre of oil, you'll probably be able to find some Mobil 1 somewhere, I mean they have it at Wal Mart, not to mention Mobil stations in the US.
I've been using Mobil 1 regularly since around 1998, in temperatures ranging from -20C to over 40C. I've had it in my Maxima since April and it's made the VTC tick a lot less frequent, I imagine by plating better, and freeing up the small passages. My Dad used it in his 88 Prelude Si in the desert, temperatures exeeding 50C in the summer, put 280,000km on the engine, ran like it was brand new, no noticable oil usage, and flew through smog testing.

Amsoil vs Mobil 1
I've been using mobil 1 for years my 1982 max got 375k mls b4 it was wrecked. My 96 max got 395k b4 oil started mixing with coolant a couple of months ago so i changed the engine to a 98 with 31k mls and mobil 1 is what i put in that one also. I still change it every 3-4k mls because i like to see clean oil.
I've used both
You can find my Mobil 1 reports (2 as I recall) in Bill's spreadsheet. I just did a uoa with Amsoil for the 1st time ever, and posted that at BIOG. In Mobil 1's favor, the oil stayed in grade each time I ran it 5,000 miles and the wear rates looked real good. Buying it in the 5 qt. jugs at Walmart makes it a cheap date. I used the Amsoil 6,500 miles, about 30% longer than the Mobil 1. Most metal wear was better, particularily iron... 40% better actually.
However the oil thickened up slightly. I bought the Amsoil from a maxima.org guy whose prices were very good I thought.
Which is better? In all fairness, I think it is a personal call. Everyone's engine and driving patterns are different. All I know in my '01 Max, Amsoil does slightly better than Mobil, and Mobil 1 did much better than dino. Pretty much in line with Bill's general recommendations. And 5W30 seemed to do a little better than 10W30. Other people's results may or may not be the same as mine.

Yep, you're right. We're a cult. We all stand around 55 gal. drums of the stuff and light it on fire and chant all night long

I love how the Mobil 1 zealots claim that people that use Amsoil belong to a cult. I find it at my place of employment as well. The extremely detailed oil analysis spreadsheet in the sticky above shows without a doubt that Amsoil is a better motor oil for extended drain intervals. If you are only going to change the oil every 5k, the differences are really not that much. Amsoil used to be leaps and bounds above the rest, but Mobil 1 and Redline have really done a good job in recent years leaving the gap much smaller. Your not going to notice any difference at all using either oil. Both oils will get you 300k and beyond. Amsoil is cheaper if you practice extended drain intervals. If not, Mobil 1 is.
This statement gets the idiot of the year award. "If you download the spread sheet in the lubrication section and look closely at the information collected you'll see Castrol GTX is probably the best motor oil you can put in our engines. Don't waste your $$ on synthetics, they really don't protect you any better."
Try actually reading and understanding the spreadsheet before making stupid comments. Castrol GTX is the best "Conventional oil". It isn't even close to a good synthetic.
