Air filter question.

On my bike and in our 4-Runner I am running K&N air filters. Does anyone here run a K&N in the stock air box on their 2nd gen Max? If so, did it have any noticable improvement in power? On the 4Runner and my 1500LC I could tell a difference in power and also the fuel economy and just wondering if the Max responds similarly or if the stock a/f flows well enough.

Thanks.

I never ran a K&N filter in my stock airbox. However, I run a K&N low profile filter now. I had panel filter in my 88 ranger....I like the performance/mileage gains from it...though they aren't huge.

Yeah, I don't expect to turn 'er into a quarter mile beast or anything with an a/f but it made a 1-2mpg difference on my bike... and when I went with Stage III jetting and a programable ignition module, wooohooo, it really made a difference. The stock a/f was very restrictive. Was just thinking that a mpg or two plus never buying another a/f would be nice.

Would you recommend a different setup than the stock airbox, without building a CAI? Or should I just suck it up and build one? Basically just looking for better efficiency in breathing...

Thanks man,
Will

i'm about to rip my old air box off and then just clamp a cone filter onto my MAF because i keep sucking up plastic drink lids some how and they kinda cause problems.

its an option i just thought i'd bring up, it'll last longer (the filter i mean) but the insane way how the air flow twists and turns isnt going to improve the flow thats for sure....unless you do the half assed CAI way with the existing parts

The only thing I will say about the cone filter in the engine bay like that is that when I did that, I could feel a noticible power difference when it got heat soaked. I have not had this problem witht he CAI

Ditto. I had considerable power loss with heat soak and the cone filter. I mean, the car would lag so bad that Civics would get a jump on me. With the CAI, I don't have very noticeable heat soak (maybe if I shut down the car when it was warm, and started 15 minutes later....but even that clears up after I start driving for a little bit.

ummm...are you missing your grill, cornering lamp, headlight, or splash pan....or are you just disposing of your mcdonald drink containers behind your corner lamp? Because with the stock setup....or even a freakin CAI, there is no way for something like that to get in there unless you missing the above.

I would think so! That's a really unlikely thing to have get stuck in there unless someone put it there.
