no just be aware of your surroundings and pay attention to traffic. also common sense goes a long way. just look around and think to yourself if i was a cop where would i be? i my opinion a radar dectector would make driving for me too unpleasent and i was just be too damn paranoid. they go off alot for not reason. But if you do insist on getting one valentine 1 is supposed to be the best

its a nice help to have.. but you cant rely on it 100%. It's like you can have the fastest bike in the world, however if you dont no howto truely ride and your running from the cops.. you can get caught. Speed is just a by-product.

its a waste a money. I usually try to stay about 10 mph above the limit. Never got a ticket yet and never worried about getting one. Plus you'll save gas as well as wear and tear on your ride.

I dont think its worth it cuz their so $$ and now they user laser, which is instant and by the time your detector tells you something, hes already caught you speeding or whatever...

i've had my radar for about half a year now, and all i can say is that its worth it. once of these days, you will get pulled over by an as$hol3 cop and he will give you a ticket for going 1-5 over the limit. i dont speed much, but sometimes either when going on a trip, or an open road at night, going 80, they will catch you, and it has saved me plenty of times. i would say at least 10 times.

Get a scanner, and have it autoscan all the police frequencies....then you know where they are and whst going on in your town ahead of time

Scanners are not $200, well some are but you can get a decent one for like $50....then find out the frequency your town/surrounding area uses and punch them in to scan. Generally all police are around the same frequency. Goto Radio Shack and ask

Its definitely worth it. I think of it as another line of defense. You still have to keep an eye out for cops and anticipate where they will be but sometimes they're hidden really well and a detectors the only thing that will save you. And as was said above, even if it just saves you one time, its already paid for itself

I think scanners are a waste of money. Not only are cops now using instant-on laser but also instant-on radar. The only way a scanner can help is if he clocks someone ahead of you and that signal hits your detector. But if it's a lonely highway, the scanner will just let you know you'll have red & blue lights behind you soon after. It may save you here and there, but for the most part, I think you'll get caught anyway.

On a side note, a good detector is Valentine one because it tells you if the cop is ahead, next to or behind you.

Also, having a scanner in your car that can scan police, fire or emergency frequencies is illegal in some states... be careful and don't get an extra ticket when your scanner goes off and lets you know you've been clocked.

Best thing to avoid speed traps, speed in a group... cops generally target the one car in the left lane, not the pack, too hard to pinpoint one car... unless he has laser.

Let me share a story about my radar/laser detector:
I'm on the the highway going about 85 in a 65 zone and this stupid Chevy (Impala or Lumina?) starts tailgating and I speed up to 90-95, shortly thereafter my radar detector goes off and I get scared as hell so my instinct was to slow down. As I do so, I check the rearview mirror to make sure the tailgater slows down too, I wanted him to know I was slowing down for a very important reason. So as I check the rearview mirror I see flashing blue lights at the top of his windshield, "HOLY $HIT AN UNDERDOVER COP!" So I change lanes and the guy just passes me. Maybe he figured it wasn't worth the effort to stop me afterall since there was so much traffic or something...

Overall my radar detector has definitely paid itself off, however, I really wish it could give me a bit more of an advanced warning. I got a ticket for going 69 on a 40 zone and the speed was 'estimated', the cop got really ****ed off when he saw my detector. We'll see how this ticket does in court. Also, be aware that cops can camp out on the side of the road and turn on their radar once they see you and think you're speeding.

There is only one detector to get. The Valentine 1.
I just broke down and got it.
It wont prevent you from getting a ticket, but it reminds me not to speed.
I would rather pay $400 towards a toy, than 400 towards a cop's paycheck.

Even though I know my area, my Passport X50 helps me at night. I have bad night vision, so spotting cops is hard. It already saved me dozens of times and ive had it only for a few months. It wont help you if you're doing 120 in a 55 or something extreme like that, because you cannot brake intime, you would be going to fast. But anything like going 75 or 80 in a 55, you have enough time to slow down, even with Laser.

picture worth a 1000....nah, $400

Only reason I got it is becuase friend lives/goes to school in Santa Barbara. I visit him every few weeks and its a ~300 mile drive for me, so I really dont like going slow on 101. One time when I was going over to see him, at 10PM friday night, I go the usual 80+ in the 65 zone and wow, noone in front of me, lots of lights in the back far away, go as fast as you want. BAMN, i see red lights light up on the side of the road...its a cop. So after that I decide to get a radar.

i agree with all the valentine one guys. well worht the 400 in my opinion. mine picks up when a cop is coming over a hill. havent encountered a huge hill, but enough of one where i cant see him, and then my baby goes off to warn me. it picks up like 8 blocks away, so gives plenty of time to slow down. i havent taken her out on the highway yet, but im going to chicago and then to kenosha later this month, so we'll have to try it out then, but im sure it will work just as good then. i love how the arrows point out where the signal is coming from. if youre going to get a radar detector, do it big and go all out. get the valentine. and the best part is that when they upgrade, for like 180 bucks, you send yours in, and you get the latest model. my review of the valentine v1.8 = A++++

I like the Passport X-50 and it catches all sorts of radar. If you have a heavy foot you might consider getting one before you shell out $$$ for a ticket. As far as I know Val 1 does not detect laser...

I hava rocky mountain radar/laser scrambler its supposed to scramble the signal. If they clock you the gun will read 0 so they cant give you a ticket if they do not know your speed.I take a lot of trips to nyc and atlantic city and it works for me.

Got a f*'in $200 ticket from aa officer **** for going about 1-3 mpb over in a 30!!! Currently in the apeals process. This is what he said at court... that he was travling at 30, and that he got his speedometer checked out. So, logistically if I was going faster than him, and we both pulled off from the same light, and I was ahead, than I was going 30mpg+... so basically saying he can make up whatever speed he wants... anyways, its a bunch of BS and the judge fined me $200

Dont they have to have proof, instead of just his BS words? What I am saying is, I dont know about state laws, but I live in Buffalo, NY... and if this kinda BS works in the court, how is a radar detector going to help me?

Acutally, I was in an Acura Integra... at the time. Still soo ****ed, just yesterday I had to mail ANOTHER $50 fee for the apeal.. thats $200+$50(first fee)+$5- = $300 for going about 1-3 mph over... for maybe a couple seconds IF even that. Honestly I'm not even sure I went over at all, becuase I was looking at my speedometer, cuz I seen the ***** officer on my side all that time for about 4 blocks.

One time I was driving down 480 (clev. area)at night going about 80 in a 60. Came up over a hill and I saw an anomaly in the lights beneath an underpass. By the time my Bel 880 exploded into it's "laser alert" I was already braking. Right after he shot me I could see him duck back down into his car and shut the door, so I knew that was that. Being the quick thinker I am, I yacked her over two lanes and got off the exit ramp before the underpas. VICTORY!!!

Dont ya love it when the cops get

Score 1 for the bad guys!

Radar detectors are good and bad. They go off (especially in the city) every few blocks. However they do alert you to cops. I have a cobra from circuit city and it has saved me quite a few times. However if the cop is good, he will get you, no doubt. Radars are line of sight and if you cant see him then he cant see you, but if the vehicle has instant on equipped then no matter what you have you will get caught. When I was a cop we would leave the radar off and you develop the ability to tell how fast a car is going, then we would pop on the instant on and we owned em. What I feel is the best (better than a scanner, especially for long trips on the interstate) is a CB radio, I have one with a magnetic antenna that I use when I hit I 10 to Louisiana or Florida. YOu hear all the truckers talk and they warn each other where cops are sitting. You just follow their lead and no problems, a cb also alerts you to accidents. Truckers hardly ever get tickets for speeding so try a cb. As for a scanner, Bearcat from radio shack.

im in nyc, and i dont drive anywhere without speeding, i do 60-70 down regular streets, i fly by everyone no matter wut, im one o f those ppl u would think is going really fast for no reason, but ive been driving like this for 2 years, and guess what? no ticket...if ure speeding at 3 in the morning try to stick with other ppl speeding, like someone said earlier about speeding in groups, what kind of an idiot speeds and gets caught in such an obvious way? slow down over big columns on the side of the road where cops can be, or billboards or whatever the case may be....so many times i was like 30 above the speed limit in a commercial street saw a cop car up the block and slowed down, passed them, then took off again just like the song "certified gangstaz" says....."See police, slow the ride up...." youll o 60 MPH, do 20MPH in front of him, then do 70 when u pass him, big deal story of my life....ill try to hold a seminar on how not to get caught speeding, its not very difficult, just surprises the hell out of me that radar detectors are necessary for some of u....common sense fellas....

and the guy with the story of the impala behind him when he was diong 80, then decided to speed up because the impala was tailgating, that was police having more important **** to do and an act of God that u didnt get pulled over, cuz at that point, correct me if im wrong, ure radar detector didnt go off when the pig was behind u for the first few seconds/minutes, so how r u glad u had ure detector....oh and police cars out here in NYC are usually impalas with 48 antennas sticking out the back of it...driven by big white guys in black neighborhoods with a donut box on the dash and a huge bulging gun on their waist, with, usually, a football jersey and tight jeans....dont forget the potbelly, no offense coppers

I'm always amazed about those NY cops, i mean, i look at our local guys, all in shape and ready to take down anyone, and then i see those cops in NY, and think....wtf can this guy do? i bet he cant even chase me...

As for the 'travel in groups', know that sometimes they pull over more then just that ONE car, i seen 4 standing on the road..all stoped by one cop. And if you try to run, they might chase you.

just my $0.02

cops do a thing called pacing, there cars speedometer is periodically checked out, so if hes doing 50 and your pulling away from him and the speed limit is 50, your toast. pacing is a legal way to catch speeders and will hold up in court. just be careful, i slow for all crown victorias in my area, whether there police interceptor badged or not. i never race mustangs either. the local police and sheriff offices have mach 1 mustangs that try to race all over town. as soon you get to about 70 - 80 your toast.
