if you need the assistance then go for it but don't fully rely on any such device.

First of all, if you are pulled over without a detector, for not speeding too badly, you have a good shot at a warning. If you have a detector, you're getting written up.

Fact: A bad detector is worse than nothing, because it will give a false sense of confidence.

A good detector like the V1 is nice to have, but it's not perfect, and if you are overly confident you will get more tickets at 90 mph in a 70 with a V1, than me at 77 in a 70 without one.

Personally I've never had one. I'd like a V1, but I'm not paying $400 for a RD. That's f**king nonsense. I never go the speed limit and have never gotten a ticket. If I'm alone on the highway I'll go at 78-80 in an 80. If I'm with other cars I'll go as fast as they are going, preferring a spot in the back of the pack, and I keep an eye out for cops. This is safe from a ticket standpoint. Otherwise I just keep an eye out for them, never speed in great excess, and don't act like a **** when there is a lot of traffic around. A lowered car with nice wheels, clear corners etc, is like a spotlight to a policeman, and if your RD doesn't tell you about him in time and he pulls you over you're getting a ticket. I would have no doubt that a lot of cops would far more aggressively give tickets to those with RDs - like the guy who got a ticket for a few over in a 30 mph zone.

Na, I disagree with that. Like I mentioned before I was a cop and I didnt care if you had a detector or not, if you were doing more than 10 over you was getting a ticket, unless it was the end of shift and I had some twiz lined up We were taught in the academy that if you pull somebody over, you might as well cite.

aight, dude, valentine 1 is all that, and it saved me about 30 tickets this year so far. My first year driving in 2001, I've gotten 7 tickets in one single year. I was pi$$ed because pretty much all the money i saved goes to the dammmn cops. I then researched and bought the valentine 1. Then I drive much faster and it beeped more than ever to save me a bunch of times. I know speed is just a by-product, but when you are a victim to the powerhouse from a maxima, your foot is heavier than your head. As a result, I still get an average of 4-5 tickets a year. My license has been suspended twice, especially when the cops found out that you have one of these 400 dollars gadgets in the car, they will never let you off the tickets. It's good to have a radar, but not for a pound foot monster like me.

I have a V1 and it's starting to get a little outdated. It doesn't pick up all of the newest radars anymore, I might send it in for an update.
It has saved me a few times though, speeding bigtime and it goes off just in time for me to slow down (long before I even see a cop)

I say radar detectors are the most helpful in the sense that they tell you if there is a cop around if you are thinking about hitting the gas. It has saved my *** on roads where I was thinking about playing around with my car but it went off so I stuck to the speed limit and passed a cop soonafter. If you are already hauling a** then chances are you are already screwed. My $.02

yeah you just gotta be smart about it if you have one. pure common sense. it doesnt protect you from getting pulled over, it just gives you warnings. be more alert, look around, take in your surroundings.

A good tip:

Drive around your area (every road and highway) for the first week doing the speedlimit or at most, 5mph over the limit. That way you KNOW which X and K bands are fake (automatic doors, etc), it will make it easier to know when theres a cop. Whenever I see K band pop up in areas that it usually doesnt, Ive seen a cop shortly after 95% of the time. It will make driving easier for you. But when you go on road trips, slow down whenever you see X or K band even if its false, you cant be too sure.

I was talking to a radioshack guy one day about radar detectors. His advise was to get a D.A.R.E. licence plate. He said that those work a lot better. He said that he got pulled over 7 times, and each time they just said "thanks for supporting D.A.R.E. Sounds a little too good to be true, but i think it would be worth a try. Why else would a Radio Shack guy talk me out of buying something?

The dare licence plates look nice especially on a black car I may consider getting one if they're cheap.

Can't cops turn their radars off and on??? Wouldn't that make having a radar detector pointless? I saw some show on how cops are going to the extreme when hiding. It showed a cop with a radar gun and he was dressed up as telephone man and he was the top of telephone pole monitoring speeds.

LOLZ, either way, radar detector does help. for those who think is a waste of money, maybe because you guys never had one??? they are not waste of money. there are times when you will get saved once from it, and that radar has already paid for itself.!

Q: Is a radar detector worth it???

A: Lets just say this, if you know you're speeding, you'd rather TRY not to get stoped (and thats what RD does) then not try at all!

imo this sums it up

I have the Valentine 1 and although it costs $400, it has saved me that initial $400 many times over. There is no reason not to have one, its not fool proof, but if it saves you from one ticket, thats enough to pay for itself in ticket fine, insurance surcharge, hassle of going to court. . etc etc.

without a radar detector is like driving in the dark with no lights. It pays for itself just one time. you can tell when the man is around as long as their radar is on which it usually is. Even if your not speeding you can still be pulled for some other dumb sht. For ex. your at the red light waiting to race someone, your radar goes off and you realize a cop just pulled up a couple cars back or theres one coming in the oposite direction wich is the easiest way to get caught speeding.............

cops have like a pause on there radar.. and they can just push unpause and zap you.. thats true. But hopefully he shoots it off at the cars before you.. and its good because i need to no if ima haul a$$ and run from him or not. Evaluate your choices.

For roadtrips or long drives its a MUST. Anyone who says different is out of thier mind. In your hometown not really needed as much for city driving. Experience and knowledge of ur roads is much more helpful than hearing that damn thing beep 200 times a second city driving lol. But yes, they do pay for themselves the first ticket avoided. Just get ready to throw that leadfoot from the gas to the brakes cause u got a few sec. at most before they ding u.

Yeah its the best investment. I suggest the Valentine One but I know a lot of people like the Passport one but the Valentine One is awsome. Dont waste anymore time thinking about it and just do it. Even though I got a lot of tickets. Just thinking about how many I would have gotten if I didnt have a radar detector.

EXACTLY.....was crusin back from work yesterday and a COLORADO State Patrol was sitting behind the hill just off of the on-ramp waiting for people and the valentine went off around the curve that was before the hill and you could tell it was a cop cause it steadily got faster..probably a good 1.5 miles of warning..90% of cops leave the guns on if they are clocking or if the are a traffic cop.....with the valentine one I am surpirsed they don't have a money back gaurantee like if you get a ticket will refund the ticket money or something of that nature....it is just completley fool proof......I seriously can't stress enough how good the arrow are and how the V1 just blows away the competition.....like I said I have had it 2 months and it has saved me 2 tickets......at least and one was a "school" safety zone.....buy V1 and lock this damn thread

sunten1 - owning a detector all depends several factors:
1. Do the roads where you live make it easy and safe to go 10-20 over the limit?
2. What type of enforcement do the local police enforce? Hand-held Lasers? Photoradar? Car-mounted detectors? Speed traps?
3. Do you drive a lot on the highway?

1 - Depending on the road conditions where you drive, owning a detector might be a wise investment. If you live in an area which heavy congested traffic, speeding might be a moot point cause you'll have to constantly weave in and out of traffic which gets wearysome after a while. Open roadways with heavy traffic is hard to have speed traps ~ a lot rely on photo radar.

2. Check out what kind of methods the local police use to enforce speed limits. If they always set up traps with laser guns, owning a detector, even a Valentine One, is useless. They'll wait until you’re within 100 feet then zap you. Your detector goes off and it's too late. Cattle-herding methods (parked on side of road), Photo-radar, car-mounted, radars that are always on, then a Valentine One will work just fine. Spend a while taking mental notes how your police use their gear. In my city, they always use a Laser gun which makes speeding on inner-city roads a gamble. On the freeways however, it's photo radar - with a good detector, it'll pickup the returns on the backs of the cars in front of you (Valentine One will do).

3. If you drive a lot on the highway, owning a detector will work just fine, but make sure it's a good one. Most highway enforcement methods use cops with radars always on. However, if traffic is light, speeding is a gamble. My sister is an RCMP officer. On highways, especially at night, she would flip her radar on just before her car was recognizable. Only takes 2 seconds for the radar to calculate your speed.

Finally, always drive smart. Know the neighbourhood you drive in. Find out where the traps are always posted. Talk to friends. Knowing your roads and where the danger spots are is always a good driving habit, whether your speeding on purpose or not. Also, spend good money on a detector. V1's cost around $400 and are worth every penny. Only takes a ticket and the insurance cost to make it worth it's investment.

Driving a Maxima is a test of patience and discipline. It’s like riding a Arabian Stallion always ready for the gallop. You just gotta decide how and when to unleash the beast.

Wow that was a well put together thought and I would say you are 110% right on it. But i would like to add. If you are a good driver and obey the law and occasionaly go over the speed limit, a Radar detector isnt a bad investment. I like to call it a security. Kinda like a car alarm, you live in a good neighborhood but you get one just in case.
