What is the purpose of cutting bump stops

What is the purpose of cutting the bump stops when installing lowering springs?

To give yourself more travel before you hit them (less bottoming out).

If I cut the front bumpstop it won't fit into the receptical that it is suppose to fit in. And how much do I cut off

cut the bottom part, like one rib. So about 1/3, no more than 1/2.
