Polishing

hey guys
i got bored and started to polish my valve cover? i guess? How should i go about doing this? i got some fine grit sand paper and im elbow greasing away. Am i doing this right? How long should it take to get the polish look? I have some blue magic aluminum/metal polish. Will this work? I can defiently tell a difference already and its been about 20 min i guess. I started with 1500 grit paper(all i have) then im going to use a 2000 grit. Well ill let you know how it turns out. If you have any tips let them rip. I got to eat dinner them in going back to burnin off my finger prints.

You don't want to use a dremel. It'll get uneven or you'll take a chunk out. The best way is with A LOT of elbow grease. Just keep using the sandpaper.

not sure how bad yours is compared to mine but I had to start with much heavier grit at first to get all of the casting off. I started with like 200 and worked to 400 600 800 1000 then 1500. I then ran out of time so the next time I do it i want to do 2000 then polishing compounds.. It is a pain but looks amazing. I also did the same to my intake plenum but that needs to be worked over with harsher polishing compound then lighter to get them really nice.

i went out and bought a sanding/polishing kit for my drill. It got alot of scratchs in it but it made it pretty even. Then i started wit ha 1500 grit by hand then a 2000 then i started using the polish with a terry cloth towel wrapped around the drill. I cant seem to get the shine or the scratchs out. Its gets better and better but am i doing something wrong?

Thanks

Sean

well basically if you have scratches you have to rework that area until they are gone with harsher stuff. Polish is not going to get rid of that. Maybe like a tripoli compound or something a littler harsher in the polish area but I doubt you are using that.

To be honest the scratches look kind of deep. what I have done is I sanded alot with a fine wet sand then i got a polishing kit at the hardware store put it on a bench grinder and went to town, not done yet. But the dremel was not moving fast enough for me. MY $.02

If you all get tired and want pro quality result. PM me or email me. With all the material/time you spent, it might come out about the same. I can get VQ30DE or VQ30DEK.
