Man that clock is crazy!!! It's gotta have a short in it or something. When I bought the car, it didn't work, but shortly after, it started working for like a day or two. Then it decided to cut off again. Then 2 days ago, it decides it wants to work again and it has been fine ever since. This is a common problem cause 3 other people I know with 3rd gens have the same problem. Anyone else have this problem too?

Common

This is common. Caused by dry / partial joints on the clock PCB. Easy fix if you are handy with a soldering iron.

yup.. normal stuff on our car..

take it out of the dash, replace the capacitors in it and resolder all connections, and it'll work great for another 8 years.

Where would one get the new capacitors for the clock?

Yeah man that stuff will cost you up to $300 to get it fixed. These other idiots that replied to your post are idiots & have no clue on how to fix it. They are just runnin their mouths.

um, I guess you don't know that much about electronics. If you buy these parts, it will probably cost you about $5 or so and you can probably borrow a soldering iron from someone you know if you dont have one.
This method has been proven to work by many people so I'm not sure what you're talking about, but that's ok.

Dan - try Radio Shack or any electronics store

Just who the !@#!@ do you think you are, calling me an idiot when you don't even know what you're talking about yourself?! $300? PLEASE?! you can buy a new one for $125 or so, and you can simply fix yours for about $5 with parts from Radio shack! How do I know? I've fixed 3 of them for friends this way. mine's never needed it. Before you start calling people idiots, I suggest you know your stuff next time.
Good day.

Thanks!!!!

Fisrt off, i just wanna say thanks Matt93GXE for the help. But I was wondering if there was any way to take the clock out without removing the entire dash? I hope I don't have to, but it will be worth it. After 3 days, it went off again.

Now, 90 maxima se is the real idiot here because he knows nothing about cars. How do I know this? He is a guy I know from work. He's just getting into cars and he doesn't know anything at all so he needs to stop "running his mouth".

Again, thanks for the help!!!!

What colour is the sky in your world man ? I work for an electronics company and can tell you that it will only cost about $5 parts (if you need them) like the others have already posted. Mine had dry joints and cost me nothing to fix. Still working fine to this day.

Ok I've got this problem too, everything nice and dandy except I have no clue what I'm doing.

Please tell me how to remove the clock.

And to get these "capacitors" at Radio Shack do I just go in and say "I need capacitators" and they'll give them to me or are there different sizes and such. If there are different sizes what kind do I need.

Thanks

You will have to remove the centre console fascia to get to the clock. A simple process but you need to be careful. There are some looms and cables behinf the fascia that you won't want to damage.

Once you get the clock out you'll need to remove the back panel of the clock to get it out. Be careful again not to break the retaining clips. Once you have the clock apart have a close look at the PCB solder joints and for any staining on the PCB from leaking capacitors.

E-mail me if you want further instructions.

hahah no you guys are all stupid!!! hehe jk BUT, i can fix it for free!!! when it flickers, i just flick the stupid clock and it works for the rest of my drive! I swear it works, and if it flickers again and goes dim, i just give it another flick, and it goes back on for atleast 10 mintues, but usually i dont have a problem with it again.

but if you wanna actually be compulsive and so all the soldering, then yea you guys are right, 5 bucks at radio shack. The clokc doesnt bug me enough to do that though, although the burnt out lights in my switches did haha. i pulled all those suckers out opened em and replaced the lights in then, also at radio shack, 2 for a buck!! yea, did you guys konw that the hazard lights switch lights up? hehe.

well,

i have the same problem and technically speaking im sure some of your compas. had to be replaced but if the light goes on and off or fades dim then the dry joints would be the problem threw process of elimination, if the compassator was fried the problem would be a non working clock not a non constant problem. thanks guys, i wasnt sure what it was cuz i never looked at it, i always used my clock on my stereo, but know that i know its a free repair consider it done

the only reason i worried about the clock fading was because my last car would do the same thing and it ment it was going to die ....the clock would fade and stop working and my car would also stop working cause something drained the battery,so when i bought the max and same clock problem came along i was worried

The flicking method works!!! I flicked it really hard and it has worked fine for 2 days!! I also have a clock on my cd player but I still want to fix the clock sometime in the near future. Don't ask me why but it bugs me.

What do you mean save the money for a tranny rebuild? If it can be fixed for only $5, then why not? Five bucks won't help much if the tranny goes out!!!

Hey Tiger, take it easy. You are new to this board and it wouldn't be smart to alienate people, expecially someone with the experience of Matt93GXE. There is enough knowledge on these forum(s) to build a new Maxima from the wheels up. So just sit back and learn. If you don't understand, ask. Don't insult. It is extremely bad form!

He's just trying to start a little trouble. He gets a kick outta that stuff. I think that he needs to apologize because he can learn a lot from this forum so he doesn't need to be making people mad. He had taken his car to the local nissan delarship and they wanted $200 or more to fix it which is a rip off. What sounds better, $200 of $5 to fix it? There is so much information here. Thanks guys!!
