Bad Slave Cylinder or Clutch/Flywheel/Pressure Plate

Greetings to all .ORG members.

What are the symptoms of a bad slave cylinder (MT)? The reason that I am asking is because I am starting to experience shuddering while taking off in 1st gear. To add to the frustration, it does not happen all of the time. Sometimes, I can take off with the smoothness of an automatic. At the next light, the car may shudder as if I was just learning to drive.

When I purchased the car last summer, the previous owner said that the clutch was replaced about 8 months prior to my purchase date (around July of 03); however, I am starting to question whether that is the case or not.

I am also asking about the slave cylinder because I do remember reading some time ago in the .ORG about them going bad. As of lately though, I have not read much about it.

I guess what I am really looking to find out is whether or not the intermittent—starting to become constant—shuddering can be caused by a bad slave cylinder or is it definitely clutch/flywheel/pressure plate related.

Thanks a million and one in advance for all of the info and replies.

Shuddering is usually a sign that your flywheel needs to be resurfaced. also my have oil on the clutch surface.

Hey, thanks for the info. That is what I feared; however, a guy at work told me that I may be able to spray some carb or brake cleaner in through where the starter mounts to the tranny to clean off the oil--if that is what is in there. Nonetheless, are there any other opinions? I would still like to know the symtoms of a bad slave cylinder so that I can identify it when and if it does go bad. Again, thanks to all who read and replied.
