How much oil?

What's the optimal amount of oil to put into a 3rd Gen during an oil change? I am assuming about 5qt?

I just put in 4 quarts of mobil 1 10w30 in my maxima. It seems to be enough it measures just right on the dip stick so i will go with four quarts all though it might just be a little bit more not sure. If you have someone else do it like i.e. jiffy lube their computers should have the exact amount to fill your engine. If you do it yourself just go with four quarts and if it's not enough but a little more in. You don't want to overfill it and say put in five quarts and then that'll be way too much then you'll have to go back underneath your car and drain some out.

Cool, thanks. That's pretty much what I thought. I decided to change my oil today myself, and I used 5qt at first. After turning the car on and checking the oil like 10 minutes later, I noticed I had close to 1cm over the high line. Drained out a little bit, and now it's like 2mm over the high line, which should be fine, considering the level will become a little lower once I start driving the car.

Thanks for the input.

I used to work for Jiffylube, the puters are wrong allot of the time. Whats real scary is that they arent always givin u the right filter #'s.

i usually put about 4 qts.
What happens if you overfill it, and put like 5 qts, and then dont take out any, and drive like that for some time. Will it mess up the car???????

Quick google came up with this "If you put in too much oil, the engine’s crankshaft can actually come in contact with the oil. And because the crankshaft is turning at several thousand revolutions per minute, it can quickly whip your oil into a froth — like the steamed milk that sits on the top of a cappuccino. Why is that bad? Well, the oil pump can’t pump froth very well, and as a result, it can’t get oil to the parts of the engine that need lubrication. The result . . . a hefty boat payment to your mechanic."
Sound right?
