Power Steering Problem

Hey all...one problem down, now on to the next one. I have a problem with my power steering, especially when I go into a sweeping turn. It seems the power steering seems to work, and then not work. The wheel pulls and then doesn't. Almost like the power assist is OK, and then isn't. Is this a sign of the pump going bad, or the power rack? Anyone heard of this problem before? Thanks!

Does it feel sort of 'notchy' going through a sweeping turn, and kind of rocks back and forth? Mine has always done that, I've gotten used to it.

Yeah, that's it. I don't think Nissan intended for it to do that......kind of dangerous, I think. Maybe I have a lawsuit on my hands for later?

how reliable are the power steering pumps? the belt on mine is all torn up and im not sure what caused it, my brother thought it could have been because the pump was bad or something similar. so im not sure if i want to buy a new belt and see if the pump is bad, or just take the pump off.

Get the pulley replaced and get a new belt put on. My problem recently was my pulley is what caused my ps pump belt to break. I also had that problem where when I would turn sometimes it wouldnt. I thought it was the pump. Nothing was wrong with the ps pump after all it was the pulley that went bad and caused all of that, so I saved money. Your ps pump pulley could be gone or going out. The tech said the bearings inside were completely gone. So try that.

Probably meant to say a shaft bearings in the pump?? Or refering to the idler pulley for the powersteering?

My power steering dumps the fluid out almost as fast as I can pour it, about 1 quart every 10 minutes.

Maybe a pump from a 280ZX could work. I have not looked at the Maxima and 280ZX pump together, but as you know Nissan will avoid making a new part for a car if they can. INTERCHANGE: Nissan's secret weapon!
