Nissans and high mileage

Well, I bring this subject up because my Max has 132k miles on it, for a 99 (bought it with 128k 2-3 months ago). I was talking about cars with my brother the other day.. and he mentioned something like.. "it's not like it's a honda, which are basically guaranteed to last 200k miles.." when we were talking about the future for my max. Can anyone share any experiences they have with high mileage on a max/nissan? Or any other advice pertianing to this would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Dan

I just bought my max a month ago with 151,000 and its at 153k now, and it's running great. Like S15 said, it really all depends on how well you take care of it. The man that owned it before me took really good care of it so I think it will last a long time. I heard some guys on here have like 250k++ and still goin strong..so it all depends..

true like everything. the better you take care of things, the longer it will last. same for cars and everything. honda's may last a long time, but so can our cars.

VQ30 one of the best V6s ever made. Mine has 196K, uses no oil, does not smoke, etc. change your oil religiously and don't beat on it too much.

I think Hondas are over rated. Not to indicate that they are not a good car, but they are generaly more evpensive, and they usually have a four banger under the hood. I have a 91 maxima with 221K and it is still a great car. I also have a 96 maxima with 105K and I plan on running it up over 200K. Take care of it and it will take care of you.

There is no reason why, without some care and careful watch, your Maxima shouldn't last in the upwards of 250k-300k miles.

The reason older Hondas got that reputation is because of the Accords and Civics.
Typically, the types of people that bought those in the past years (90-94) were those who would take very good care of their cars. They always did every check they had to, and because of it, all the cars ran over 200k miles. The same could be done today with the Maxima, but I think there are a lot of people that just don't care to keep a car that long, so they don't take as good of care of it as they did when they got it.

i have 2 maximas all with higher milage. all you have to do is change the oil every 3 to 3.5k and they will run.

my burgundy 95 se maxima has 120k, i bought it with 40k it still runs like a champ. still does the dash.

my white 95 se maxima has 233k, agian it still does the dash and has good copression.

as far as the honda always getting 200k+ i have seen plenty that that had to get a new motor or serious motor work before the 200k mark.

the max will run for a long time also, there was a thread a few weeks ago about how many miles people have and there were plenty with high miles and still running strong. Which makes me think i need to stop pushing my car all the time its a bad habit.

Before I swapped motors, I had 212k and the car ran great. The only reason I swapped was in hopes of going boosted.
I have a buddy who is a mechanic for Nissan and he stated that hes seen maximas go over 3k.
You have to take care of it though. You get out of it what you put in!

Read this thread. That will give you an idea of the mileage that this car is capable of putting out!!

I am the same way. 197,000 on my 96 se. I believe mine were highway miles but unlike 96sepebble... i run my car somewhat hard.

if you do all the schelduled maintance, then it should be great till the day you decide to get a new car. most of the honda's i seen have lots of problems but not engine related.

A non beat-on max, that is driven by anyone with average skill (meaining they dont take it over curbs, notice if a warning light comes on etc..) should last 200,000 to 300,000 maybe more.

Since the early to mid ninties it's long been understood that honda, toyota and nissan have very similar longetivity. You're brother is either mis-informed or stuck in a timeframe more than a decade old.

I have 225,000 on my 95 and 85K on my 2000. I firmly expect the 95 to last until 250-300K

well all of the japaneese cars are basically modeled after one another. it's hilarious because my mom's 97 ES300 is EXTREMYLY similar to my Max (same as the Camry's and Accords are similar), however it is way more refined - it's the truth no flames. This includes but is not limited to a smoother transmission plus better seat comfort, ride, audio system (close), quietness, styling, paint and leather. Probably faster too. Plus on her Lexus she got a 5yr/72k bumper-to bumper warranty... now that is standing behind your product.

The reason your mom's ES300 is smoother is because they laid down tons of sound deadening and put ultra soft bushings/springs/shocks. So while the car is quiet and confortable, it's heavy and handles worse. And I seriously doubt it's faster than a maxima. The 5-sp camry of the same year might be similar.

wow for being so EXTREMELY similar they sure have a lot of differences eh? but i know what you are saying. my moms ls430 is a better built car than my max in terms of quality. but i still like my max much more. especially seeing that she paid a butt load of money for it and i can keep up with that 300hp heavy beast. and btw, a 97 ES300 is not faster than a 4th gen max. they are more tuned for comfort and not so much as for performance.

Only took me 84K to blow the first engine in my civic.

Just had intake, header, and exhaust. No FI, no nitrous, no UDP, no nothing. I was driving down the interstate in 5th gear and the motor stopped.

I'd be willing to be that the advent of leasing has shortened the lives of many cars. But in this thread there are definitely some folks who have 190k, which is good to hear. Mine is a '98 with 96k, so I guess it's just a baby relatively speaking. Man, to think that half it's life is not even quite over yet, wow. Sure, every time I see a flashy new car (today it was the infamous STi with what seemed to be xenons) pass me like there's no tomorrow I itch for a new set of wheels. But hey, not having a pymt isn't so bad either.

Wow I beat the crap outta my car

I redline 3 or 4 times a day at stop lights, on the highway.

I bought mine in January of 03 with 27,000 miles, now September of 04.. 19 months later, I have 77,000 miles.. Without including mods, just maintenance, I've replaced the water pump, both axles, routine brake jobs and oil changes. Nothing really out of the ordinary. Right now I just got an 02 and Knock sensor codes which are nothing out of the ordinary so I gotta change those this weekend. But in all honesty this has been the most reliable car I've had, even after the thrashings I've given her.. I wish I had girl that would be that good to me.

My current 97 Max has only 84k miles but my old 89 Maxima ran well up to 210k. Then I sold it for $1000 because the auto tranny was starting to slip. Engine was still running strong though, but the auto tranny is gonna give sooner or later. Take good care of it and you'll be ok

yeah, my brother is one of them, lol .. explains why his '01.5 Passat 1.8T hardly lasted w/ him

but really, let's say in my case, there would be someone who was negligent on maintenance as my brother was and claimed the car "drove good," but then there's another owner like me who gets into restoring the car to like new, would that car have a good chance of survival to at least 200K?

I saw a post with a guy with a third gen on here some where i looked but couldn't find it that had right at 500,000 miles on it. Half a million. My buddy's 3 gen has 280,xxx at current. MY 95 are both around 120,000. And they are both so strong. Perfect condition. Many miles left on them both.

I can still balance quarters on my VQ and rev the engine...at 193,000 miles. If you get LESS THAN 200,000 miles out of a Maxima, something's wrong with how you took care of it.
