Why is OE intake so stupidly complex?

I am looking at some pictures of a Stillen intake installation and I am stricken by how stupidly complex the stock intake is, and in contrast, how rediculously simple the Stillen intake is. WHY is the stock system so elaborate? What does it accomplish that the simple K&N filter does not? Don't say "nothing", because Nissan spent a LOT of money designing their part(s).

Sound reduction is the main reason. They wanted the maxima quiet, as preferred by most consumers except retards like us.

That's a 5th gen intake, isn't it? The snorkel is there to bring in the cooler air from the front of the car outside the engine bay. The filter box contains the filter and also has features that traps heavier dirt particles. The resonator(piece attached to the flexible part) is there to tune the vibrations in the intake for maximum filling of cylinder at a particular rpm and reduce intake noise.

Yes, that is a Gen 5 intake. That's just the picture I had available.

An intake such as the Stillen is obviously not "tuned" in any way. Does this reduce power at certain RPM's, or just make a lot of noise at those RPM's?

At what RPM's would an aftermarket intake make more noise than a stock intake? Would it be around 5000, or lower than that? My wife and I share the car, but my wife would rarely rev the engine above around 5K. I don't think she would appreciate a lot of noise, so want to know what I am getting into.

Drive with a stillen intake for a while then put the stocker back on and feel what you've been missing. The tip-in power, the tq with the stocker is amazing compared to all the aftermarket garbage we have for the max.

Do a google search for infomation on helmholtz resonators in automotive applications. That should help clear things up.

What filter are you running in your stock box Ben? I already hacked my box but haven't decided on a filter yet.

I ran a K&N for a long time (8 years), but it eventually got all ratty looking. I recently replaced it with a Fram AirHog. The Fram is the same type of filter as the K&N, oiled cotton gauze between metal screens. But, it seems to fit the airbox better. Of course, there is no noticeable difference in performance between the two.

My intake isn't totally stock, I'm still running the original OSCAI system

OK. I was looking for the Airhog a while back and no one had them available. I have a stock Fram filter but it's restrictive as hell so I didn't put it on.

I think I will leave my stock intake in place. I am not convinced that the aftermarket parts are anything but "cool", "different", and "louder". I am not convinced they are "better", or provide any additional power. In fact, I suspect just the opposite is true, that they are in fact a "downgrade".

Can anyone point me to dyno charts showing a stock intake vs. any aftermarket intake? That MIGHT help convince me that these aftermarket intakes are worth doing.

They are worth it depending on your desires.

The stock (which I love) its best all around performace, but then you can get a aftermarket that will giv eyou more power but in a specific area, and lose some in others.

You ca get one that will give you better performance on top end, but then you'll sacrafice some of the low end.

You can get one to bost up low end, but suck on top end.

finally can get one that pleases the middle of the RPM band, but isnt a good on the low and top but decent.

I'll stick with stock, I love the low end power, and mid range.
