car audio in a home

so i was at a party at my school over the weekend and the kid had 2 towers that he built with cerwin vega car subs loaded in each one with pioneer car speakers all around using a regular home receiver. is there any way to add a car amp to this setup to really get the power out of a sub like that?

You may want to warn your friend that he could damage that receiver by hooking it up that way. maybe/maybe not....depends on the impedance value of those speakers. most home audio equipment is set up for 8ohms. If he is running 4ohm speakers, running it at higher volumes and/or long periods of time may cause the amp circuit to overheat. Personally, I would not suggest car audio in a house. As for runnign a car amp in a house, it can be done. I really don't think it is worth it though.

then he should be ok. as for the car amp, you would need a power supply that could handle the load of a amplifier. A car battery charger with a huge cap(to clean up the DC voltage) may work.

car amps draw too much power. a $200 power inverter will really only allow you an amplifier that puts out 350w.

I run 4 ohm car speakers in my home too. My reciever does 4 ohm easily, and my subwoofers have separate amps that also can easily run at 4 ohms.

Its expensive to power the subs, but you can get a decent 4/8 ohm reciever for only $40 off of ebay.

get the 300w plate amp from www.partsexpress.com

CV subs are pretty loud with little power, that amp should do the trick.

severe waste of time. You can get better home stuff for cheaper than car stuff.

$55 for the best pair of components I have ever owned, in my room.

$60 for the reciever

$89 for my sub

$89 for the amp for the sub

I will put my speakers up against anybodys home system of comparable price.

To each his own, but IMO mine sound better. Maybe its just because I know what Im doing.

Use ebay to buy stuff, save a ton of money.

I use a HAM radio 10 amp power supply to run a 300watt amp to a 12 in my house. Works fine. Cost me like $40 on eBay
