Can Crankshaft position sensor results no start?

My 97 maxima can crank over but no spark.
The mechanics said the crankshaft position sensor located
close to the oil filter might need to replaced.
I wonder if it's true that the crankshaft position sensor can
prevent the car from start.

hah, my 95 has the hard starting problem sometimes too. when it would take quite a bit of effort to start sometimes the check engine light would go on, after pulling the code numerous times it was always the crankshaft position sensor (REF) ---- the one by the oil pan. I thought hmm maybe if i replace it it will start. wrong answer. i replaced it and it still pulls the code, and im out about 80 bucks. this sensor is not the reason why the car doesnt start but is set off when the car doesnt start easily. hope this saves you 80$
