Yesterday morning for some odd reason my clutch pedal feels unusually soft but the car drove fine. Later that night I go to start the car and the clutch pedal stays on the floor. I checked my master cylinder and the reservoir is empty! I added the needed amount of brake fluid but that didnt help, the fluid just sat there and didnt move so now im guessing I have to replace the slave cylinder hose because I see a slight leak on top of the transmission. Nissan tells me they have to replace the master cylinder and the slave cylinder. any ideas on what I should do?

 

this is bizarre, I just had this exact problem last week and I have 85K on my beast. I have a friend who is a mechanic and he said my master cylinder was in decent shape, but the slave cylinder and flex hose that attached to it both were failing. I don't know what to tell you other than the dealer will try to get you replace the entire unit (master + slave). The parts are only around $50-$80 a piece, but I wouldn't even know how to attempt at the labor.

Good luck and be careful about that flexhose! They found out that mine failed after they had installed the slave and had to redo the entire thing. I think this is common and now I'm waiting for the clutch to give out within the next 10-15K miles.

Remember, if you get stuck, keep adding fluid so you can atleast get it to the mechanic and avoid a tow!

 

I am planning on replacing the slave cylinder and the hose. My master cylinder looks fine but when i add fluid to it and pump the clutch 100 times the fluid level doesnt drop meaning I have no pressure in the lines at all.

Where is the clutch slave cylinder? I know the master is right down next to the brake booster...or am I mixed up?

 

I had all my clutch fluid leak out years ago on my 94 max when it got real cold out. I just added more fluid to the system but it requires that you bleed the clutch cylinder just like you would a brake piston. There should be a bleeder valve where the slave cylinder goes into the tranny. After I bleed my system and got fluid back into it I couldn't find a leak and the resevoir has never gotten low again (over 5 years later).

I can't explain why the fluid was all gone but my only guess is that it had gotten so cold ( I was living in North Dakota at the time) that a seal allowed the fluid to leak but eventually re-seated itslef or something like that. I had talked to someone else who had the exact same unexplainable situation as me.

Anyways my whole story was to warn that you can't just add fluid to the resevoir, the system has to be bleed. Then see if it leaks out again.

 

I had a similar problem and I switched both the master and slave cilynder but now I hear a noise when I press the clutch pedal, very loud. does this mean I need a new clutch?

Can anyone recommend a clutch replacement for a 2002 maxima. How are the Exedy clutches?

 

I heard the VQ35HR Clutch is a pretty good replacement.
