Substancial improvement over the Potenzas

Having my wife nearly swap ends on a wet street driving the stock Bridgestones that came with the SE,
I opt'd for 235/45/17 Dunlop SP 5000's what a difference in both ride and handling, I'm not saying they are the best, just a real good deal for about $130 a tire.
They are available at both Discount tires (Tires.com) and the Tire Rack (tirerack.com)

potenza

potenza RE 910.
These are the best tires I ever had.
But not cheap.

Re: Substancial improvement over the Potenzas

I had BF Goodwrench ZR4's on my SHO, they were a great tire, very sticky, but they only lasted about 10K miles under my driving. So, not very cost effective. I am looking to change out my stock tires for my 2K1. But I wanted to see if anyone had any strong opinions on any.

I prefer H-Rated

I have the same BFGoodrich 17in. H-rated tires that I had on my 93 Q45. Before those tires, on the Q, I had Nitto Z-rated 17in. tires and they rode hard. Of course they handled better, but I was giving up too much in ride quality.

I will stay with this tire primarily because it is a long lasting tire, relatively inexpensive, and the ride quality is very comfortable.

Definitely consider Nitto tires before making a decision. I had Nitto NT-450s on my Eclipse and they were a very good tire all around (wet, dry and price-wise). I have never owned any NT-555s, but I've heard the same about those. I did own a couple of sets of NT-555R Drag Radials. The contact patch on those is humongous... something like 85%!!! I used those on the front of my Eclipse every day. They lasted about 10-15k, not bad considering that I was making 320hp, drove like a bat-out-of-he||, raced it once per month and they only cost about $110ea. I was a little worried about their increased likelihood of hydroplaning in the wet, but never had a single occurance of this (over about two full years). They also handled very well considering that they were meant for straight line traction. I think the sidewalls were a little more flexible than the NT-555 street tire counterpart, but with the extra contact patch, I believe they probably handled just as well.

Anyhow, you can check out their website at:

Michellin Pilots

I had Niche Shocks and 18" Michellin Pilots on a 99 Regal GS. (Boy the Supercharger could light them up). These tires are super quiet and one of the Best Performance Tires you can buy. Their wear out a little quicker and cost a little more, but you will NOT complain and you will consider Michellin again.

I have Yokohama Avid V-4's. I like them. Quiet, have good handling and do well in lateral wet handling. They are not quite as good in wet acceleration though. Snow acceleration is poor.

I'm getting these too on order from the Tire Rack. I've been hearing real good reviews from them (check the general discussion) They also come with rim protectors and a Z-rating!

I have Nitto Drag Radials currently on my Mustang. Without them I run a 5.1sec/0-60mph, 13.6sec/qtr mi. With them I run a 4.9/0-60 and a 13.4/qtr mi (videos at link below). Mine lasted 11k miles, and that was after several times at the track. They are certainly worth the money for cars with traction problems, but I don't see why a naturally aspirated Maxima would need them.

Bridgestone S-02 Pole Position w/17x8 rims and winter tires on stock rims(if you get snow where you live), at least that's what I'm planning on getting when my stock proxies wear out.
The S-02s are expensive but they have from what I know the best west traction of the summer tires that are out there, dry traction is also top notch.
