How hard is it to change thermastat on 94 Ve

I have a 94 se and i believe my thermastat has went out. The car will over heat when i get on the highway like the thermastat gets stuck closed, and when i get off the highway sometimes it will open up and the temperature will go down. Now how hard of a job is it to replace the thermastat for my maxima. I also figured since im goin to be down there i might as well replace the water pump too. Is this an easy job I had a friend look at it and he said he didn't want to mess with it. He said it looked like you would have to pull the engine up a little bit. But he is more than likely wrong i don't really know that's why im asking you guys. I just got my maxima out of the shop like three weeks ago it was in there for two months and i dont' want to bring it back if this is an easy fix. Does anyone have any tips or pointers to help me out. Thank you for all of your help.

The T-stat is easy, but it is nowhere near the water pump. Follow the lower radiator hose from the radiator as it heads towards the engine......just before it goes into the V, you'll see the thermostat housing. The waterpump is on the other side of the engine, where all the accessory belts are. Good luck.
